Renascent started in the beginning of the year 2003, with drummer Jani Stefanovic meeting guitarist Eero Tertsunen and keyboardist Mikaela Akrenius. [8] The band official came up with their name the same week bassist Voitto Rintala joined the band. [8] In Summer 2004, the band hired Barry Hilliden as their vocalist and the band recorded their debut release Demon's Quest. In 2005, the band released Through Darkness and soon after the release, Stefanovic and Hilliden both departed from the band. Stefanovic then formed the band Miseration with former Scar Symmetry vocalist Christian Älvestam. [9] The band remained inactive until around 2014, when the band started recording a new album. [10] The album was scheduled to be released in 2016 with Tertsunen on vocals and guitar, Rintala on bass, Akrenius on keyboards and new member Markus Saarela on drums. Unblack metal is a religious philosophy and subgenre within black metal, inheriting several characteristics of it, such as the melody, the lyrics and the aesthetics, whose artists either directly oppose the Satanism prevalent in most black metal, or promote Christianity in their lyrics and imagery. Unblack metal artists are controversial within the black metal subculture, because black metal's pioneers, especially those of the Second Wave, were anti-Christian. It is also suggested that Christianity contradicts black metal's dark nature and the individualistic and misanthropic ideals of many bands.
