Retecool (English: Asscool) is a weblog/webmagazine that has existed since May 23, 2000. The initiator of this project is Hubert Roth (aka Reet). According to a survey by marketing blog MarketingFacts.nl, Retecool is currently the fourth largest weblog in the Netherlands. [1] According to themselves the weblog is mainly visited by public aged between 24 and 44 years old. Retecool is a shock blog, similar to Geenstijl.
Retecool made a breakthrough in the media on June 19, 2001 with an article related to webcam abuse by teenagers. [2]
Retecool made the national press often through its regular "Foto Fuck Friday" event, the modifying of photos related to a current event. [3] An example of this relates to the new Dutch television channel Talpa. Many photo modifications with the new channel as topic were sent in. Talpa representative Maarten van Rooijen told De Telegraaf: "Sometimes it is funny, but there are references to terrorism and the Holocaust. We absolutely don't want to be associated with that." [4] Talpa demanded that Retecool removed the photos within 24 hours of the website, which eventually happened.
Another picture showed the face of the Minister of Transport, Public Works and Water Management Camiel Eurlings morphing into that of Prime-Minister Jan Peter Balkenende. Eurlings claimed in an interview that he was shocked by the picture: "Those glasses make me look like my brother." [5]
Following the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy, the Foto Fuck Friday involved "using historic depictions of the Prophet Muhammad endorsing everyday commercial products. [6] [7] [8]
As of 2007 Retecool has tens of thousands of visitors a day, and is now more than just a linkblog. The section "Luister" (English: Listen) provided a couple of years new obscure available music with description. Urban Desing[ sic ] displays photos and pictures of remarkable graphic design from the street.
In December 2006, Retecool won the award for Best Weblog of Europe outside the United Kingdom, taking 30 percent of the votes. [9] A year later Retecool successfully defended that award.
The editors and commentators on Retecool have taken up their own kind of language, taking clues from "street language," local dialects and other jargon. The Retecool Wiki has an overview [10] to help visitors unfamiliar with the used language. Some examples:
Radio 538 is a Dutch commercial radio station that was founded in Hilversum, Netherlands in 1992. It is the second-most listened to radio station in the Netherlands. Radio 538 refers to the wavelength on which Radio Veronica used to broadcast in the 1970s. The station is owned by Talpa Network. Mostly targeting a young audience, the station plays a mix of music from the decades 1980s to today, currently genres were dance, R&B, pop, and rock music. The music selection is mainly based on the Dutch Top 40 chart. Its breakfast and drive-time shows are talk-intensive.
Camiel Martinus Petrus Stephanus Eurlings is a Dutch politician and businessman. A member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), he served as Minister of Transport, Public Works and Water Management from 2007 to 2010.
RTL 4 is a Dutch free TV channel; it is the most-watched commercial station in the country, popular especially with those aged between 20 and 49. RTL 4 is a general entertainment channel with infotainment, television drama, talk shows, game shows, news and talent shows. It is owned by RTL Nederland, a subsidiary of RTL Group. The Dutch Kids' Choice Awards were presented in three years, featuring nominees that are relevant to Dutch audiences. In 2010, the US Kids' Choice Awards aired, which included categories for the Netherlands and Belgium inserted into the broadcast.
RTL 8 is a Dutch free-to-cable television channel that was launched on 18 August 2007 replacing Tien, previously known as Talpa. RTL 8's main target audience consists of women. It broadcasts soap operas, talk shows, films and reruns of programmes from its sister RTL channels. In the mornings and late afternoons children's channel RTL Telekids is broadcasting on RTL 8. Officially RTL 8, along with all other Dutch RTL channels, is broadcasting under a Luxembourg television license. Therefore, the channel is also headquartered in Luxembourg. By doing this RTL can avoid more severe control by the Dutch media authorities, as Luxembourg does not have a strict authority that regulates its broadcasters. Dutch citizens need a subscription to a cable, satellite, IPTV, or DVB-T provider to view the channel. All providers include the channel in their base package.
