The Retired Armed Forces Officers' Welfare Association or RAOWA, [1] is an association for the welfare of retired armed forces officers in Bangladesh.

History

It was formed by members of two defunct organization Defence Officers' Retired Association (founded in 1960s) and Ex-Defence Officers (founded in 1974 by Lieutenant Colonel Hesamuddin Ahmed) on 18 June 1982. [2] The Retired Armed Officers Welfare Association Club is located in Bangladesh. [3] The government of Bangladesh in an agreement with the association decided to import 5000 taxi cabs in 2013, which would only be driven by retired armed forces personnel. [4] Major General Alauddin MA Wadud (Retd) is the current president of the association. [5] Major General Kamruzzaman (Retd); Commodore Khurshid Malik (Retd); and Air Commodore Anisur Rahman (Retd) are the vice-chairman of the club for the year of 2021-2022. [6] Lieutenant Colonel Kamrul Islam (Retd) is the new secretary general of RAOWA. [7] RAOWA club is located in Mohakhali DOHS, Dhaka Bangladesh. [8]

On 22 December 2020, the managing body of Retired Armed Forces Officers' Welfare Association club was dismissed by the Department of Social Welfare and replaced with servicing officer and civilian bureaucrats. The Ministry of Defense send a letter to RAOWA directing changes to the body including the selection of top three management positions rather than direct elections. [9] The Daily Star described the incident as a "sad day for RAOWA". [9] This followed the RAOWA calling for an investigation into the murder of Sinha Md Rashed Khan, a retired army major. [10]

Victory Day is a national holiday in Bangladesh celebrated on 16 December to commemorate the defeat of the Pakistan Armed Forces in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 and the Independence of Bangladesh. It commemorates the Pakistani Instrument of Surrender, wherein the commander of the Pakistani Forces, General AAK Niazi, surrendered to the Mukti Bahini and their Indian allies, ending the nine-month Bangladesh Liberation War and 1971 Bangladesh genocide and marking the official secession of East Pakistan to become the new state of Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Army is the land warfare branch and the largest component of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. The primary mission of the Army is to provide necessary forces and capabilities to deliver the Bangladeshi government's security and defence strategies and defending the nation's territorial integrity against external attack. The Directorate General of Forces Intelligence, commonly known by its acronym DGFI, is the defense intelligence agency of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, tasked with collection, collation and evaluation of strategic and topographic information, primarily through human intelligence (HUMINT). As one of the principal members of the Bangladesh intelligence community, the DGFI reports to the Director-General under the excecutive authority of the head of government, the Prime Minister, and is primarily focused on providing intelligence for the Prime Minister, the Cabinet of Bangladesh, and the Armed Forces of Bangladesh.

The NSI is the leading body of the Government of Bangladesh in the field of internal security, counter terrorism, counter intelligence and foreign intelligence. NSI is the largest among the intelligence agencies in Bangladesh, the others being the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), SB, CID, PBI and intelligence directorates of armed and paramilitary forces. The agency stands under the direct authority of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Abdul Wadud is a retired three-star rank Bangladesh Army officer and present managing director of Summit Power.

Susane Giti SUP, FCPS is a retired major general of Bangladesh Army. She is the first woman to be promoted to 2 star General. She served as the Commandant of Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. She was promoted to the rank of major general on 30 September 2018 as the first female major general in the Bangladesh Army.

Brigadier General Professor Nurunnahar Fatema Begum is the first ever Paediatric Cardiologist of Bangladesh and a Brigadier General under the Bangladesh Army. In 2019, she was awarded both the Independence Day Award and the Shena Bahini Podok for her irreplaceable contribution to the field of Paediatric medicine. She single-handedly established the concept of Congenital cardiac intervention in Bangladesh.
