The Reut Group (formerly known as the Reut Institute) is a non-profit policy think tank and Israeli lobby organization [1] in Tel Aviv. It was founded by Gidi Grinstein in January 2004 to provide decision-support to Israeli policymakers. [2] [3] The Reut Institute was established in January 2004 by Gidi Grinstein and a team of founders.

ADL-Reut report

In February 2016, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the Reut Institute announced a joint initiative to counter the BDS movement (an organization that calls for comprehensive boycotts against Israel similar to those levied against the South African apartheid regime in order to end its alleged violations of Palestinian human rights) and delegitimization of Israel. [4] The collaboration led to a secret report that the Jewish American magazine The Forward in February 2017 reported was "circulating privately in Jewish policy circles." [5] The 30-page report was leaked in April and published on the pro-Palestinian website The Electronic Intifada . The report titled "The Assault On Israel's Legitimacy The Frustrating 20X Question: Why Is It Still Growing?" discussed the growth of the BDS movement and suggested strategies to combat it. The 20X question referred to the report's estimates that pro-Israel groups have increased their spending to combat the BDS movement 20-fold over the last six years yet "results remain elusive." [6]

The report described the wave of anti-BDS legislation that had swept across the US which it attributed to the pro-Israel network. Asking "How Far Should We Take Anti-BDS Legislation?" the report warns that "Legislative initiatives in a number of states have raised concerns regarding their possible violation of free speech. Future legislation need to be developed with careful consideration of this issue to avoid the potential for rallying progressive groups in coordinated opposition and "turning off" the long tail." The report also suggested harsh treatment of "instigators": "The instigators must be singled out from the other groups, and handled uncompromisingly, publicly or covertly as possible." [7]

Activities

The goal of the Reut Institute is to "identify the gaps in current policy and strategy in Israel and the Jewish world, and work to build and implement new visions." [8] Reut describes itself as a strategy group that supplies its services pro bono to Israeli government decision-makers. [9]

Israel 15 Vision is a model developed by Reut to close social and economic gaps through programs focusing on different aspects of the Israeli society, from historical sites to innovative technologies. [10]

In the United States, the Reut Institute is backed up by the organization the American Friends of the Reut Institute. [11]

Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) is a left-wing activist organization in the United States that supports the boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign against Israel. Its critics say it musters Jewish opposition to and works to undermine public support for Israel.

StandWithUs is an American right-wing pro-Israel advocacy organization. Known for working closely with the Israeli government, the organization focuses on education and is active on American campuses. SWU supports Israeli settlements and does not believe the West Bank is occupied.

Gidi Grinstein Israeli entrepreneur

Gidi (Gideon) Grinstein is an Israeli societal entrepreneur. He is the founder of the Reut Group, a non-partisan not-for-profit research, strategy and leadership group. He helped to found TOM: Tikkun Olam Makers, a global nonprofit that aids the disabled, elderly and poor. In December 2017, Forbes named TOM one of fifteen technology companies to watch in 2018. AMCHA Initiative

The AMCHA Initiative is an American campus group and an anti-Semitism watchdog group that combats BDS activities on campuses. AMCHA was founded in 2012 by University of California Santa Cruz lecturer Tammi Rossman-Benjamin and University of California Los Angeles Professor Emeritus Leila Beckwith. The term Amcha is Hebrew for "your people" or "your nation."

Boycotts of Israel are the refusal and incitement to refusal to have commercial or social dealings with Israel in order to inflict economic hardship upon the state. The objective of boycotts of Israel is to influence Israel's practices and policies by means of using economic weapons as the coercive force. The specific objective of Israel boycotts varies; the BDS movement calls for boycotts of Israel "until it meets its obligations under international law, and the purpose of the Arab League's boycott of Israel was to prevent Arab states and others to contribute to Israel's economy. Israel believes that boycotts against it are antisemitic.

The current campaign for an academic boycott of Israel was launched in April 2004 by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) as part of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign. The campaign calls for BDS activities against Israel to put international pressure on Israel, in this case against Israeli academic institutions, all of which are said by PACBI to be implicated in the perpetuation of Israeli occupation, in order to achieve BDS goals. Since then, proposals for academic boycotts of particular Israeli universities and academics have been made by academics and organisations in Palestine, the United States, the United Kingdom, and other countries. The goal of the proposed academic boycotts is to isolate Israel in order to force a change in Israel's policies towards the Palestinians, which proponents argue are discriminatory and oppressive, including oppressing the academic freedom of Palestinians.

Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) is a pro-Palestinian college student activism organization in the United States, Canada and New Zealand. It has campaigned for boycott and divestment against corporations that deal with Israel and organized events about Israel's human rights violations.

BOYCOTT! Supporting the Palestinian BDS Call from Within, commonly known as Boycott from Within, is an association of Jewish and Arab Israelis who support the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Founded in 2008, it describes itself as following the guiding principles and sharing the goals of the Palestinian BDS movement, as delineated by Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI).

Reactions to Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) refer to the views of international actors on the BDS movement.

Amendment No. 28 to the Entry Into Israel Law

The Amendment No. 28 to the Entry Into Israel Law prohibits the entry into Israel of any foreigner who makes a "public call for boycotting Israel" or "any area under its control" – a reference to the Israeli settlements. It denies entry, visa and residency permits to these affected foreigners.

Anti-BDS laws and resolutions oppose boycotts of Israel. The name comes from the BDS movement, which calls for boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel to pressure Israel to meet what it describes as Israel's obligations under international law. Anti-BDS laws are designed to make it difficult for people and organizations to participate in boycotts of Israel while anti-BDS resolutions are symbolic and non-binding parliamentary condemnations, either of boycotts of Israel or of BDS itself. Generally, such condemnations accuse BDS of being anti-Semitic and are often followed by laws targeting boycotts of Israel.

The American Studies Association's boycott of Israel is an ongoing boycott of Israeli educational institutions by the American Studies Association (ASA). ASA's decision to begin boycotting Israel in December 2013 was controversial because it was the first major American scholarly organization to do so and it was heavily criticized. In April 2016, four ASA members aided by the pro-Israeli Brandeis Center sued ASA but the lawsuit was dismissed in 2019 when the judge ruled that plaintiffs lacked standing.
