Rhidaya Trivedi, commonly known as Rhiya Trivedi, is a lawyer based in New York City.
Trivedi is from Canada. [1] Her parents are South Asian immigrants from an upper-caste Hindu family. [2] As a teenager, Trivedi attended St. Paul's School in New Hampshire, where she led the student environmental group, Eco-Action. [3] She went on to attend Middlebury College, where she continued climate justice work, and, in 2009, participated in the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. [4] She attended New York University School of Law, where she presented an assignment that was judged by Ron Kuby. Kuby was impressed by Trivedi's argument, and offered her a summer internship, which turned into a full law partnership with him when she graduated in 2017. [3] Trivedi gave the convocation address for her graduating class at NYU. [5]
In 2017, Trivedi and Kuby represented more than a dozen immigrant rights activists who were arrested while protesting the unconstitutional detention of immigrant rights leader Ravi Ragbir. Trivedi was a member of Ragbir's defense committee. Of the activists arrested, two were members of New York City Council — Jumaane Williams and Ydanis Rodriguez. Williams would take his case to trial, and was convicted of one charge and acquitted of two others.
In 2018, Trivedi and Kuby represented Prakash Churaman, who was arrested for felony murder when he was 15, pro bono. [2] Trivedi argued Churaman was coerced into confessing to a crime he didn't commit. [6] In 2022, Churaman was cleared of all charges and began pursuing a 25 million dollar lawsuit against the NYPD. [7] Trivedi also defended activist, Ravi Ragbir, when he was detained by ICE in 2018 and threatened with deportation. [8] [9] She defended activist, Patricia Okoumou, in a high-profile case against the immigration activist for climbing the statue of liberty in 2018, stating, "There are times when justice demands that we transcend the law". In 2019, Trivedi and Kuby represented Sundhe Moses, a client that was abused and coerced into falsely confessing to a drive-by shooting by Louis Scarcella. Trivedi and Kuby helped Moses clear his criminal record. [12] [13]
In 2020, Trivedi and Kuby defended a homeless man, Joseph Matos, who stabbed a student in self-defense when he kicked the cardboard structure Matos was sleeping and living in. [14]
In 2021, Trivedi defended environmental lawyer, Steven Donziger, against Chevron Corporation. [15] [16]
In 2022, Trivedi and Kuby began representing Chanel Lewis, a client convicted of the murder of Karina Vetrano. Trivedi argued that Lewis was wrongfully convicted due to invalid evidence and racial bias. [17]
In 2023, Trivedi and Kuby represented Kareem Mayo, a client who spent 20 years in prison for a murder he says he didn't commit. The conviction against Mayo was vacated by Judge Dena Douglas on January 23, 2023. [18] Trivedi and Kuby also represented Daniel Gill in a 2023 lawsuit against Rudy Giuliani for “for false arrest, civil rights conspiracy resulting in false arrest and false imprisonment, defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligent infliction of emotional distress”. On December 7, 1993, a mass shooting occurred aboard a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train in Garden City Park, New York, United States. As the train arrived at the Merillon Avenue station, passenger Colin Ferguson began firing at other passengers with a semi-automatic pistol. Six of the victims were killed and nineteen others were wounded before Ferguson was tackled and held down by other passengers on the train.
El Sayyid Nosair is a convicted terrorist, currently serving a life sentence. An Egyptian-born American citizen, he assassinated Meir Kahane in 1990 in New York City, and was later convicted of involvement in the 1993 New York City landmark bomb plot. Nosair was acquitted in his initial trial on murder charges for the assassination of Kahane, but in his later trial was found to have committed the murder.

Lynne Irene Stewart was an American defense attorney who was known for representing controversial, famous defendants. She herself was convicted on charges of conspiracy and providing material support to terrorists in 2005, and sentenced to 28 months in prison. Her felony conviction led to her being automatically disbarred. She was convicted of helping pass messages from her client Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, an Egyptian cleric convicted of planning terror attacks, to his followers in al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya, an organization designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the United States Secretary of State.

Steven Robert Donziger is an American attorney known for his legal battles with Chevron, particularly Aguinda v. Texaco, Inc. and other cases in which he represented over 30,000 farmers and indigenous people who suffered environmental damage and health problems caused by oil drilling in the Lago Agrio oil field of Ecuador. The Ecuadorian court awarded the plaintiffs $9.5 billion in damages, which led Chevron to withdraw its assets from Ecuador and launch legal action against Donziger in the US. In 2011, Chevron filed a RICO (anti-corruption) suit against Donziger in New York City. The case was heard by US District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan, who determined that the ruling of the Ecuadorian court could not be enforced in the US because it was procured by fraud, bribery, and racketeering activities. As a result of this case, Donziger was disbarred from practicing law in New York in 2018.

As a member of the Brooklyn North Homicide Squad, he and his longtime partner Stephen Chmil built a reputation for obtaining convictions in difficult cases. Since 2013, Scarcella has received extensive and sustained publicity for multiple allegations of investigative misconduct that resulted in false testimony against crime suspects, leading to innocent parties serving long prison terms and guilty individuals going free.

Disha Annappa Ravi is an Indian youth climate change activist and a founder of Fridays For Future India. Her arrest on 13 February 2021 for an alleged involvement with an online toolkit related to Greta Thunberg and the 2020–2021 Indian farmers' protests gained international attention. The Indian government alleged that the toolkit, a standard social justice communications and organizing document, providing a list of ways to support the farmers' protests, fomented unrest and a form of sedition. The arrest was widely criticized both within India, and internationally.
Deanna Maree "Violet" Coco, usually known as Violet CoCo, is an Australian climate activist who was briefly jailed on remand for blocking the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 2022. She successfully appealed her 15-month jail sentence, with the convictions remaining, in March 2023, after the judge found that her conviction was based on false information from the police about an ambulance being blocked by her protest. She was instead put on a 12 month conditional release order.
