History

The Rhode Island Breakers were announced on September 23, 2026 as one of two new teams set to begin play in 2027, along with the Colorado UFL team. [3] The Breakers are the first professional football team to play in Pawtucket since the Rhode Island Steelers folded midseason in 1966; [4] the Pawtucket/Providence region's best-known football team was the Providence Steam Roller, the name used for the city's teams spanning from 1916 to 1942, one of which won the NFL championship in 1928.
