Rhyl Ladies' Football Club, until 2016 known as Rhyl & Prestatyn Ladies' Football Club [2] and previously Prestatyn Ladies & Girls Football Club, [3] are a women's association football club based in Rhyl, Denbighshire, Wales. They play their home matches at Rhyl F.C.'s Belle Vue Stadium.

History

Prestatyn Ladies & Girls were founded in 2009 in Prestatyn by Tom Jamieson with a five-year plan to eventually reach the Welsh Premier Women's Football League. [4] In 2014, Prestatyn Ladies & Girls won promotion from the North Wales League to the Welsh Premier Women's Football League [5] by winning a play-off against the Ceredigion League's Aberystwyth University 10–0. [6] Owing to ground regulations, the club moved away from Prestatyn and joined with Rhyl to play at Belle Vue Stadium. The club were also renamed Rhyl & Prestatyn Ladies as a result. [3] Following the club's move to Rhyl, a new women's football club was set up in Prestatyn and became affiliated with Prestatyn Town F.C. which became known as Prestatyn Town Ladies in order to continue women's football in Prestatyn. [7]

Following the disbandment of Wrexham Ladies' F.C., a number of players moved to Rhyl & Prestatyn Ladies. [8] Rhyl & Prestatyn Ladies along with Llandudno Ladies were the only teams from North Wales competing in the Welsh Premier Women's Football League with concerns expressed that they would be the main teams representing the region as North Wales League clubs had been dissuaded from applying for promotion due to the expense. [9]

In August 2019, it was announced that Rhyl Ladies would be withdrawing from the Welsh Premier Women's League citing a lack of commitment to playing in a national league and were therefore unable to attract a team. [10]

Youth

Rhyl & Prestatyn Ladies run a number of youth teams. In 2016, their under 16 team won the North West Wales League title. [11]

Rhyl Town in North Wales

Rhyl is a seaside resort and community in the Welsh county of Denbighshire. It lies within the historic boundaries of Flintshire, on the north-east coast of Wales at the mouth of the River Clwyd. To the west is the suburb of Kinmel Bay and the resort of Towyn beyond, to the east Prestatyn, and to the south Rhuddlan. At the 2011 Census, Rhyl had a population of 25,149, with Rhyl-Kinmel Bay having 31,229. The Abergele–Rhyl–Prestatyn conurbation numbers over 60,000. Once an elegant Victorian resort, an influx from Liverpool and Manchester after the Second World War changed the town's face. It had declined sharply by 1990, but has since been improved by major regeneration investments. Several million pounds of European Union funding secured by the Welsh Government has been spent on developing the seafront.

The Vale of Clwyd and Conwy Football League was a football league formed in 2011 following the split of the Vale of Clwyd Football League, which itself was formed in 1974 as an amalgamation of the Dyserth League and the Halkyn Mountain League. The Premier Division was in the fifth level of the Welsh football league system in North Wales. The league folded in 2020 due to a reorganisation of the Welsh football league pyramid, with many teams joining the North Wales Coast East Football League.

A corresponding North Wales Coast West Football League will be also be established at the same time.

The 2020–21 Cymru North season is the second season of the second-tier northern region football in Welsh football pyramid. Teams will play each other twice on a home and away basis.
