Rianto (born 1981) is an Indonesian-born, Japan-based dancer, choreographer and actor. A famed contemporary dancer, his life inspired Garin Nugroho's 2018 film Memories of My Body . [1]
Rianto was born in Kaliori village, Banyumas, in the southwestern part of Central Java, Indonesia. He specialises in Lengger, a traditional cross-gender dance from Central Java. [2] [3] [4]
In 2015, he performed SoftMachine, a solo work under the direction of Singapore artist Choy Ka Fai where he caught the attention of renowned British choreographer Akram Khan. [5] His most recent solo work 'Medium' premiered in 2016. [6]
After successfully touring the world with Akram Khan's company and Choy Ka Fai's SoftMachine, he will perform Khan's vengeful Until The Lions as well as Medium at the Esplanade's da:ns festival in October 2018.
Gamelan is the traditional ensemble music of the Javanese, Sundanese, and Balinese peoples of Indonesia, made up predominantly of percussive instruments. The most common instruments used are metallophones played by mallets and a set of hand-played drums called kendhang/Kendang, which register the beat. The kemanak and gangsa are commonly used gamelan instruments in Bali. Other instruments include xylophones, bamboo flutes, a bowed instrument called a rebab, a zither-like instrument siter and vocalists named sindhen (female) or gerong (male).
John Stanley Body was a New Zealand composer, ethnomusicologist, photographer, teacher, and arts producer. Nighat Chaudhry was born on 24 February, in Lahore, Pakistan and moved to London with her parents when she was one year old. She is a trained Sufi & Mystique Kathak classical dancer. She started her journey from London and has been active as a professional Kathak dancer for over three decades. She studied ballet and contemporary dance. She met Nahid Siddiqui aged 14, regarded as one of the greatest Kathak dancers, and trained under her guidance. Inspired to learn the classical forms of her own culture, she abandoned ballet to understand and absorb the nuances of the style. Memories of My Body is a 2018 Indonesian Javanese-language coming-of-age drama film directed by Garin Nugroho and produced by Ifa Isfansyah. The film tells the story of a dancer in the Lengger tradition, revolving around his introduction to it and finding his self-identity. The plot is loosely based on dancer Rianto's life; Rianto also stars in the film. The ensemble cast is Muhammad Khan, Sujiwo Tejo, Teuku Rifnu Wikana, Randy Pangalila, and Endah Laras.
Dust is a one-act contemporary ballet about World War I, choreographed by Akram Khan, music by Jocelyn Pook and created for the English National Ballet. It marked the first time Khan worked with a ballet company, and premiered on 2 April 2014 at the Barbican Centre, London.
Melati Suryodarmo is an Indonesian durational performance artist. Her physically demanding performances make use of repetitive motions and often last for many hours, sometimes reaching "a level of factual absurdity". Suryodarmo has performed and exhibited throughout Europe and Asia as well as in North America. Born in Surakarta, she attended Padjadjaran University, graduating with a degree in international relations before moving to Germany. She lived there for 20 years, studying performance art at the Braunschweig University of Art with Butoh choreographer Anzu Furukawa and performance artist Marina Abramović.
