Commodore Riaz Uddin Ahmed is a Bangladeshi naval officer and the former chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority and the Mongla Port Authority. [1] [2] He has held significant positions in the Bangladesh Navy and served as the managing director of the Khulna Shipyard. [3] He is the former managing director and advisor of Summit Oil and Shipping Company Limited. [4] [5]

Early life and education

Ahmed joined the Bangladesh Navy as a cadet in 1978 and was commissioned in 1980. [6] He pursued higher education in engineering and military strategy. [6] He earned a BSc in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1983. [6] He also completed the PSC course from the Pakistan Naval Staff College in 1994, the Armed Forces War Course from the National Defence College (Bangladesh) in 2001, and furthered his studies at the People's Liberation Army National Defense University in 2004. [6]

Career

Ahmed has served in various strategic and administrative capacities within the Bangladesh Navy. [6]

Ahmed was the managing director of Khulna Shipyard. [6] He oversaw the construction of the first Bangladesh Navy landing crafts made in the country at Khulna Shipyard. [7] He was appointed chairman of Chittagong Port Authority on 9 July 2008, replacing Commodore M Farooq. [8]

Ahmed served as the chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority till 12 February 2011. [8] Commodore M. Anwarul Islam replaced him. [8] In November 2013, he was promoted to Rear Admiral along with Akhtar Habib, M. Anwarul Islam, and Abu Shaker Md Abdul Baten. [9] He was then appointed Principal Staff Officer of the Bangladesh Navy headquarters. [9] He later served as the chairman of the Mongla Port Authority. [10] In August 2017, he was appointed advisor to Summit Oil and Shipping Company Limited. [11]

Ahmed is a member of the managing committee of Chittagong Boat Club. [12] He was the managing director of Summit Oil and Shipping Company Limited and an independent director of Summit Alliance Port Limited, subsidiaries of Summit Group. [13] He was a member of Kurmitola Golf Club, Association of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, Bangladesh, and the International Association of Ports & Harbours. [14] [13]
