Richard Neville Hoskin (born 18 October 1959) is a former first-class cricketer who played for Otago from 1980 to 1993. Since his retirement from the game he has worked as a sports administrator and businessman.
A right-handed batsman who usually batted at number three or four,Hoskin,who was born at Invercargill in 1959,played his first match for Southland in the sub-first-class Hawke Cup in 1977–78. At the age of 19 he was appointed to captain the team in 1978–79.
He made his first-class debut for Otago in 1980–81,and remained a fixture in the side until his retirement after the 1992–93 season. In his fourth match,against Northern Districts,he scored 57 (Otago's top score),and his first century,117 (out of a team total of 196 for 8). [1]
He toured Zimbabwe with a Young New Zealand team in 1984–85 but played in only one of the four matches. [2] It was his only first-class match for a team other than Otago.
His most successful seasons were 1985–86 and 1987–88, [3] when in each case Otago won the Shell Trophy. In 1985–86 he scored 401 runs at an average of 40.10,with a highest score of 111 off 133 balls against Central Districts when Otago successfully chased 342 for victory in 70 overs. [4] In 1987–88 he made 599 runs at 49.91,including three centuries –101 against Auckland, [5] 157 against Northern Districts, [6] and 105 against Wellington [7] –to lead Otago's batting aggregates. [8]
He continued to play for Southland in the Hawke Cup,captaining them during their reign as title-holders from 1989 to 1992. He later played a few matches of Hawke Cup cricket for Central Otago,and scored 74 and 162,the two highest scores on either side,when Central Otago beat Taranaki in 1996 to win the title for the first time. [9] When a Hawke Cup "team of the century" was selected to mark the centenary of the competition in 2011,he was one of the 11 players chosen. [10]
Hoskin was a selector for the Otago team from 1997 to 2000 and from 2003 to 2005. He was Chief Executive Officer of the Southland Cricket Association from 2003 to 2007,Commercial Manager of the Otago Cricket Association from 2007 to 2009, [11] and CEO of Sport Southland from 2009 to 2013. [12]
Hoskin lives in Arrowtown,Otago,with his wife Sally. He managed an English-language school in Queenstown, [13] and he and Sally now run Arrowtown Lodge. He also works for the New Zealand sports marketing agency The Clubhouse. [14] His daughter Laura Hoskin is a professional golfer. [14] [15] His cousin,Michael Lamont,also played for Southland and Otago.
Robert Wickham Anderson is a former New Zealand cricketer who played nine Test matches and two One Day Internationals for the New Zealand national cricket team between 1976 and 1978. Anderson was born at Christchurch in 1948.
John Chaloner Alabaster is a former cricketer who played 21 Test matches for New Zealand between 1955 and 1972. A leg-spin bowler,he was the only New Zealander to play in each of the country's first four Test victories. In domestic cricket was often partnered at the crease for his provincial side Otago by his younger brother Gren,who bowled off-spin. A schoolteacher,he later served as Rector of Southland Boys' High School in Invercargill.
The Otago cricket team,nicknamed the Volts since the 1997–98 season,are a New Zealand first-class cricket team which first played representative cricket in 1864. The team represents the Otago,Southland and North Otago regions of New Zealand's South Island. Their main governing board is the Otago Cricket Association which is one of six major associations that make up New Zealand Cricket.
Grenville David "Gren" Alabaster is a former New Zealand first-class cricketer who played for Otago,Canterbury and Northern Districts between 1955 and 1976. A winner of the New Zealand Cricket Almanack Player of the Year Award in 1972,Alabaster was an all-rounder:a right-arm off-break bowler and left-handed batsman. He toured with New Zealand to Australia in 1973–74,but never played in a Test match. His brother Jack Alabaster played 21 Tests;the two brothers played together for Otago and Southland for many years.
The Hawke's Bay cricket team,representing the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand,played first-class cricket between 1883–84 and 1920–21,and competed in the Plunket Shield in the 1914–15 and 1920–21 seasons. The side has continued to appear in minor cricket and now competes in the Hawke Cup competition.
The Hawke Cup is a non-first-class cricket competition for New Zealand's district associations. Apart from 1910–11,1912–13 and 2000–01 the competition has always been on a challenge basis. To win the Hawke Cup,the challengers must beat the holders,either outright or on the first innings in a drawn match,on the holders' home ground.
Colin Walter Barclay was a New Zealand cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler who played for Central Districts. He was born in Wellington.
Anthony Warren Short is a former New Zealand cricketer who played three first class cricket matches and a single one day match for Central Districts between 1978 and 1980. A right-handed batsman,he struggled at first-class level,scoring only 96 runs from five innings –largely in a career-best knock of 33. He did,however,enjoy greater success as an all-rounder in District Cricket's Hawke Cup for Wairarapa,and as a bowler for Central District's under-23 team. He was also a very occasional right-arm medium bowler,who sent down a tidy yet wicket-less 64 balls.
Robert Alexander Holloway is a New Zealand former cricketer. He played 15 first-class matches,including 14 for Otago in the Plunket Shield,during the 1960s as an opening batsman. A good club batsman who is considered to have not fulfilled his potential in representative cricket,Holloway also played for Southland in the Hawke Cup.
The Southland cricket team represents the Southland Region of New Zealand. They compete in the Hawke Cup.
Henry George Siedeberg was a New Zealand cricketer who represented the national side and was several times the national billiards champion.
Nathan Gregory Smith is a New Zealand cricketer. He made his first-class debut for Otago on 30 March 2016 in the 2015–16 Plunket Shield. Prior to his first-class debut,Smith was named in New Zealand's squad for the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He made his Twenty20 (T20) debut for Otago on 26 December 2016 in the 2016–17 Super Smash. He made his List A debut for Otago on 25 January 2017 in the 2016–17 Ford Trophy.
Peter Howard Barton is a New Zealand former cricketer. He played first-class cricket for Northern Districts and Otago.
Kevin James Burns is a New Zealand former cricketer. He played 58 first-class and 31 List A matches,all but one of them for Otago between the 1980–81 and 1991–92 seasons.
Lewis Douglas Hollands is a New Zealand former cricketer. He played six first-class matches for Otago between 1969 and 1972.

The Australian cricket team toured New Zealand in January and February 1881. The Australians played ten matches against provincial teams,nine of which fielded 22 players with the aim of providing more evenly-matched contests. Two further brief matches were played to fill the allotted time after a scheduled match finished early. As none of the matches were 11-a-side they are not considered to have been first-class.
