He served as the 50th Attorney General of Ohio from 2011 to 2019,and in both houses of Congress:in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1983 to 1991 and in the U.S. Senate from 1995 to 2007. He is a member of the Republican Party.

Being decided by 1.2%,this was the closest statewide election in Ohio. Cordray and DeWine faced off again in Ohio's 2018 Governor election;DeWine won that election by 3.7 percentage points.
