Richard Christopher Refshauge AM (born 1947) is a former Australian judge.

Early life

Refshauge was born in 1947, the son of Major General Sir William Refshauge and his wife Helen (née Allwright). One brother is Andrew, who went on to become Deputy Premier of New South Wales. He was educated at the Australian National University, [1] graduating BA (Hons) in 1972 and LLB in 1975. [2] He was president of the Australian National University Students' Association in 1972. [3]

Career

Refshauge worked for Canberra law firm Macphillamy Cummins & Gibson from 1976, becoming a partner in 1981 and the senior partner in 1992. [1] The firm merged with Sly & Weigall in 1994 which then changed its name to Deacons Graham & James in 1995 [1] (subsequently acquired by Norton Rose).

From 1980 Refshauge taught part-time in what was then called the Faculty of Law at the ANU. [1] From 2001 he was an adjunct professor. [1] He is the editor of the standard text on court practice in the ACT, Civil Procedure ACT. [4]

In 1998 Refshauge was appointed Australian Capital Territory Director of Public Prosecutions. [1] In 2008 he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory. [1] He retired from the Supreme Court in 2017 on reaching the statutory retirement age of 70. [5] He was appointed Acting Judge of the ACT Drug and Alcohol Court in 2020. [6]

Refshauge was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2025 Australia Day Honours for "significant service to the community of the Australian Capital Territory, and to the arts". [7]

Personal life

Refshauge is married to Barbara. [8]

The Supreme Court of Norfolk Island is the superior court for the Australian territory of Norfolk Island. Murray Rutledge Wilcox, (1937–2018) was an Australian Federal Court Judge, serving from 11 May 1984 until retiring on 2 October 2006. He also served as an additional judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory from 23 April 1983 to 30 September 2006, and Chief Justice of the Industrial Relations Court of Australia between 1994 and his retirement in 2006. He may be best remembered for handing down the controversial Noongar Native Title ruling a fortnight before retiring.

Sir Richard Arthur Blackburn was an Australian judge, prominent legal academic and military officer. He became a judge of three courts in Australia, and eventually became chief justice of the Australian Capital Territory. In the 1970s he decided one of Australia's earliest Aboriginal Land rights cases. The annual Sir Richard Blackburn Memorial lectures in Canberra commemorate his service to the Australian legal community.

Major General Sir William Dudley Duncan Refshauge, was an Australian soldier and public health administrator. He was Honorary Physician to Queen Elizabeth II (1955–64), director-general of the Australian Government Department of Health (1960–73), and secretary-general of the World Medical Association (1973–76).
