Richard L. Thomason is an American businessman and politician who served as a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives for the 13th district. Elected in November 2020, he assumed office on January 12, 2021, and left office January 10, 2023. He is currently running for an open At-Large city council seat in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Thomason was born in Louisville, Kentucky and moved with his family to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1994. After graduating from Lincoln High School, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in real estate from the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis. [1]
Outside of politics, Thomason works as a Relationship Manager at Central Bank in Sioux Falls. He was elected to the South Dakota House of Representatives in November 2020 and assumed office on January 12, 2021. In the 2021–2022 legislative session, Thomason was a member of the House Local Government Committee and House Taxation Committee. [2] [3]
Richard Franklin Pettigrew was an American lawyer, surveyor, and land developer. He represented the Dakota Territory in the U.S. Congress and, after the Dakotas were admitted as States, he was the first U.S. Senator from South Dakota.
Stephanie Marie Herseth Sandlin is an American attorney, university administrator, and politician from the Democratic Party. She represented South Dakota's at-large congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 2004 until 2011. Sandlin was first elected to Congress in a July 2004 and won three full terms before losing to Republican Kristi Noem in 2010. She was the youngest female member of the House, and the first woman elected to the House from South Dakota. Before her 2007 marriage to Max Sandlin, she was known as Stephanie Herseth. She is a Democrat and a member of the Herseth family of South Dakota. She and Senator Tim Johnson are the last Democrats to win a statewide and/or federal election in South Dakota.
Nils Andreas Boe was an American attorney who served as the 23rd Governor of South Dakota from 1965 to 1969. He served as a judge of the United States Customs Court, later the United States Court of International Trade.
James George Abourezk was an American attorney and politician from South Dakota. A member of the Democratic Party, he served in both chambers of the United States Congress for one term each; a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1971 to 1973 and a member of the United States Senate from 1973 to 1979; he was the first Arab to serve in the United States Senate. In 1980, Abourezk founded the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) with the goal of counteracting anti-Arab racism in the country. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War, but was also a critic of United States foreign policy in the Middle East, particularly with regard to the Arab–Israeli conflict. Under his leadership, the ADC became especially active following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and the subsequent Gulf War, during which he became concerned about the rising rate of targeted hate crimes against Arabs and also against people misidentified as Arabs.
