Mavericks is a surfing location in northern California outside Pillar Point Harbor, just north of the town of Half Moon Bay at the village of Princeton-by-the-Sea. After a strong winter storm in the northern Pacific Ocean, waves can routinely crest at over 25 ft (8 m) and top out at over 60 ft (18 m). Routinely, waves that break can be recorded on seismometers. The break is caused by an unusually shaped underwater rock formation.

Edward Ryon Makuahanai Aikau was a Hawaiian lifeguard and surfer. As the first lifeguard at Waimea Bay on the island of Oahu, he saved over 500 people and became famous for surfing the big Hawaiian surf, winning several awards including the 1977 Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship. He was also a crew member on the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa.
Bundoran is a town in County Donegal, Ireland. The town is located near the N15 road near Ballyshannon, and is the most southerly town in Donegal. The town is a tourist seaside resort, and tourism has been at the heart of the local economy since the 18th century. Bundoran is a surfing destination and was listed by National Geographic magazine in 2012 as one of the world's top 20 surf towns.
The Banzai Pipeline, or simply Pipeline or Pipe, is a surf reef break located in Hawaii, off Ehukai Beach Park in Pupukea on O'ahu's North Shore. A reef break is an area in the ocean where waves start to break once they reach the shallows of a reef. Pipeline is known for huge waves that break in shallow water just above a sharp and cavernous reef, forming large, hollow, thick curls of water that surfers can tube ride. There are three reefs at Pipeline in progressively deeper water farther out to sea that activate according to the increasing size of approaching ocean swells.

Ross Clarke-Jones is an Australian big wave surfer. He originally came from Terrigal in the Central Coast, of New South Wales, Australia where he enjoyed surfing Terrigal Haven, a point break that produces rare waves lasting for up to 300 metres on a big swell.
Cortes Bank is a shallow seamount in the North Pacific Ocean. It is 96 miles southwest of San Pedro, Los Angeles, 111 miles west of Point Loma, San Diego, and 47 miles southwest of San Clemente Island in Los Angeles County. It is considered the outermost feature in California's Channel Islands chain. At various times during geologic history, the bank has been an island, depending on sea level rise and fall. The last time it was a substantial island was around 10,000 years ago during the last ice age. It is possible that this island was visited by the first human inhabitants of the Channel Islands, most notably San Clemente Island, whose seafaring residents would have been able to see the island from high elevations on clear days.

Margo Harkin is an Irish filmmaker. Best known for the drama Hush-a-Bye Baby and the documentary Bloody Sunday: A Derry Diary, Harkin produced the surfing documentary Waveriders in 2008.
Lauren Davies is a British novelist and screenwriter. Her screenwriting credits include the feature documentary Waveriders, which was nominated for a prestigious Grierson Award and was voted one of the Top 50 Irish films of all time in May 2020 by the Irish Times. WAVERIDERS, shot on film and narrated by Cillian Murphy, was awarded the 2008 Dublin International Film Festival Audience Award and was the IFTA winner for best Feature Documentary in 2009 She created the story for the innovative multi-platform game IAMPLAYR, which won the Cannes Gold Lion 2009. She wrote the documentary CLOUD 9 about 11-times world champion surfer, Kelly Slater, for Quiksilver. She has written 7 books, most recently the environmental children's book, LITTLE TURTLE TURNS THE TIDE about ocean plastics, released in 2020. Her last novel 'SWELL' set in the glamorous world of professional surfing was released in 2015 on Amazon. Her first novel SERVE COOL, published by Time Warner, was a top 10 debut novel of the year in 2001. Her novel ANGEL ON AIR was long-listed for "romantic comedy of the year" by the Romantic Novelists' Association in 2003, followed by the novel WATER WINGS set in Ireland. In 2011, Lauren founded LOLA COVE FILMS to develop her own film projects. She produced the award-winning short BEYOND THE SCARS screened on Channel 4, and now works as a screenwriter and producer. Lauren recently worked as the surfing coordinator on the Disney feature ARTEMIS FOWL, directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh. Her debut original screenplay, has been optioned and is currently in development. Lauren is a Trustee of the environmental Charity Surfers Against Sewage.
Mark Robert Visser is an Australian professional big wave surfer, author, keynote speaker and ocean adventurer. Visser is best known for being the first person to surf Hawaii's most dangerous wave Jaws, Maui, at night in 2011. It was documented in a film called 'Night Rider'.

Ireland has become increasingly popular as a surfing destination, due to its exposed location on the turbulent Atlantic seaboard. Irish surf culture was further introduced in Australia by Sinead.
