The Rickmers Group was an international provider of services for the maritime industry, a vessel owner and an ocean freight carrier. The group's head offices are located in Hamburg and Singapore. The group of companies is divided in three segments: Maritime Assets, Maritime Services and Rickmers-Linie. Following insolvency proceedings in 2017 the assets were acquired by Zeaborn Group and Bertram Rickmers [1] The following year Rickmers and E.R. Schiffahrt were combined as Zeaborn Ship Management. In the Maritime Assets segment the Rickmers Group acted as Asset Manager for its own vessels and also for those of third parties and is in charge of related shipping projects. In the Maritime Services business segment the Group provides ship management services, whereas in the Rickmers-Linie business segment the Rickmers Group operated as a shipping line for breakbulk, heavy lift and project cargo, and additionally offered individual voyages.

Rickmers Group operated a fleet of 130 ships with more than 1,720 seafarers and over 470 staff ashore (as at 31 Dec 2015). A total of 95 companies have been included in the consolidated financial statements in the year 2015.

History

The Rickmers family has been in the shipping industry for more than 180 years. Nucleus of the present day Rickmers Group was the Rickmers Werft (shipyard) founded in 1834 by Rickmer Clasen Rickmers in Bremerhaven. R.C. Rickmers was born in 1807 as the son of fisherman Peter Andreas and his wife Deike on Helgoland. “Fear God – act justly and dread no one” was his dictum in life when he went into business as a young shipbuilder.

Today, the brothers Bertram R.C. Rickmers and Erck Rickmers, fifth generation descendants of Rickmer Clasen Rickmers, operate two legally independent companies. Bertram R. C. Rickmers, who left the family firm in 1982, went into business in Hamburg as shipbroker and shipowner with establishing his first company (MCC Marine Contracting and Consulting). Two years later he founded the shipping company Schiffahrtsgesellschaft Reederei B. Rickmers GmbH & Cie. KG and put his first containership Patricia Rickmers into service in 1985. [3]

In the year 2009 the two brothers Bertram R.C. Rickmers and Erck Rickmers teamed up to celebrate 175 years of family history. The celebration included a reception at Hamburg’s City Hall hosted by that times city’s mayor Ole von Beust and a symposium with some of the world’s famous experts on geopolitics and economics. Speakers were historian and television presenter Niall Ferguson, Kishore Mahbubani, who was listed by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines as one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the world, Nouriel Roubini, who was named as one of the “10 new gurus you should know” by the Fortune magazine, and Nassim Nicholas Taleb, whose book “The Black Swan, The Impact of the Highly Improbable” was the top non-fiction seller on Amazon in 2007. The panel was moderated by Martin Wolf, associate editor and chief economics commentator at the Financial Times. [4]

In the year 2015 Rickmers Group parent Rickmes Holding changed its legal form from limited partnership to stock corporation. Bertram R.C. Rickmers acts as Chairman of the supervisory board, with Rickmers Group CEO Dr. Ignace Van Meenen and CFO Prof. Dr. Mark-Ken Erdmann serving as members of the Rickmers Holding AG executive board. The past fiscal year of 2016 ends with a loss of 341 million euros, the debt is around 1.5 billion euros. This also includes 275 million euros, which the investors of company have made available via a high-interest bond with a coupon of 8.875 percent. [6]

<i>Potosi</i> (barque)

Potosi was a five-masted steel barque built in 1895 by Joh. C. Tecklenborg ship yard in Geestemünde, Germany, for the sailing ship company F. Laeisz as a trading vessel. Its primary purpose was as a "nitrate clipper" collecting guano in South America for use in chemical companies in Germany. As its shipping route was between Germany and Chile, it was designed to be capable of withstanding the rough weather encountered around Cape Horn.

Beluga Shipping

Beluga Shipping was a German heavy-lift shipping company in the Hanseatic city of Bremen. It was a world market leader in heavy-lift shipping and also highly innovative in related fields. As such, it was the first to equip ships of its fleet with SkySails that can reduce fuel consumption by up to 5%, and was the first company to send a heavy-lift ship from Europe to Asia along the Northern Sea Route through the Arctic Ocean rather than through the Suez Canal. The company was declared insolvent in March 2011, affecting 670 employees.

Flag of Bremen

Alk was a 1,175 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1924 by Neptun AG, Rostock, Germany for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Contest. In 1946, she was allocated to the Soviet Union and renamed Vereshyagin (Верещагин). She served until about 1960, being deleted from Lloyd's Register in that year.

Anakriya was a 1,000 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1925 as Riga by Travewerk Gebrüder Goedhart AG, Hamburg, Germany. After a sale in 1934 she was renamed Königsberg. In 1939, she was renamed Stettin. In 1945, she was seized by the Allies at Hamburg, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Conway. In 1946, she was passed to the Soviet Union, initially renamed Stettin, and then renamed Anakriya.

Pella Sietas

Pella Sietas was a shipbuilding company in Neuenfelde, Cranz, in southwest Hamburg. It was created from the insolvent firm of J.J Sietas KG Schiffswerft GmbH u. Co. It is located in the estuary of the Este river at Unterelbe. On 29 July 2021 the company filed for insolvency. The insolvency proceedings against the assets of the responsible shipyard are open.

F. Laeisz is a German shipping company with offices in Hamburg, Rostock, Bremerhaven and Grabow, Germany, as well as Japan and the Philippines.

Reederei Zürich AG was a Swiss company operating the maritime cargo ships Adele and Amelia, and a small fleet of Rhein river ships between 1952 and 1996. Not to be confused with the company of the same name that was established after the shipping company was deleted from the commercial registers.

E.R. Schiffahrt GmbH & Cie. kg is a shipping company with headquarters in Hamburg. It employs around 3,500 staff at sea and on land. In 2018 following acquisition by Zeaborn Group, E.R. Schiffahrt and Rickmers Shipmanagement were combined as Zeaborn Ship Management.

Erck Rickmers German businessman and politician

Erck Rickmers is a German businessman and politician of the SPD. He was an MP from 2011 to 2012.
