In the 1920s it was agreed to build a gravity dam on the River Esla at Ricobayo. It impounds the Ricobayo Reservoir.
The dam is part of a hydroelectric scheme known as Saltos del Duero. This scheme involves other dams in the catchment area of the Duero such as the Almendra Dam.
As well as electricity generation, Ricobayo Reservoir is used for recreation. [2] In the summer of 2021 the two uses came into conflict, when the reservoir was largely drained by the electric utility company Iberdrola, making Ricobayo less attractive to tourists. [3]

The Almendra Dam, also known as Villarino Dam, in Salamanca, Spain, interrupts the course of the River Tormes five kilometres from the village from which it takes its name: Almendra. It was constructed between 1963 and 1970.
The Tormes is a Spanish river that starts in Prado Tormejón, in the mountain range of Gredos, Navarredonda de Gredos, province of Ávila. It crosses the provinces of Avila and Salamanca, ending at the Duero River, at a place known locally as Ambasaguas, after 284 kilometres (176 mi). This river is not able to provide the water supply to the population during summer, and for this reason, the dam of Santa Teresa was constructed in 1960 with a capacity of 496 million cubic metres (402,000 acre⋅ft) to regulate and assure the water supply in summer as well as moderate high flows in winter. Also, it has the dam of Villagonzalo and the Almendra Dam, near where it joins the Duero. Due to limitations in providing water supply to the population during summer, the Tormes River plays a crucial role in water management through its dams.
The Esla is a river in the provinces of León and Zamora in the northwest of Spain. It is a tributary of the Duero River that starts in the Cantabrian Mountains and is 275 kilometres (171 mi) long. The Malpaso Dam, officially known as the Nezahualcóyotl Dam, is located in the Centro region of Chiapas, Mexico near the border with Tabasco and Veracruz. It was the first of several major dams built on the Grijalva River to generate hydroelectric energy and has the second largest reservoir in Mexico, after the Belisario Dominguez Dam. Construction of the dam occurred in the 1960s and flooded not only the riverbed but also hectares of rainforest and farmland, various towns and villages and archeological sites. These include the former town of Quechula, whose 16th century Dominican church will appear when water is at low levels, and the archeological site of San Isidro which contains one of only two known double Mesoamerican ball courts. Commissioning of the dam's 1,080 MW power station began in 1969 and ended in 1977. The reservoir and later construction of a federal highway has spurred ecotourism in the area.
