Jason Carlton Thompson is an American former professional basketball player and current assistant coach for Rider University's men's basketball team since the 2022–23 season. He was a starting center playing college basketball for the Rider Broncs from 2004 to 2008, and was drafted in the first round of the 2008 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings. He holds the record for most games played with the Kings during their tenure in Sacramento.

They finished the season 14–17, 9–11 in MAAC play to finish in a three way tie for sixth place. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the MAAC tournament where they lost to Iona.

The school competed in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), part of Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), through the 2023–24 season. In July 2024, UTRGV will leave the WAC for the Southland Conference. The Vaqueros play home basketball games at the UTRGV Fieldhouse on the university campus in Edinburg, Texas.
