Marshall Islands country in Oceania

The Marshall Islands, officially the Republic of the Marshall Islands, are an island country and a United States associated state near the equator in the Pacific Ocean, slightly west of the International Date Line. Geographically, the country is part of the larger island group of Micronesia. The country's population of 53,158 people is spread out over 29 coral atolls, comprising 1,156 individual islands and islets.

Jaluit Atoll atoll

Jaluit Atoll is a large coral atoll of 91 islands in the Pacific Ocean and forms a legislative district of the Ralik Chain of the Marshall Islands. Its total land area is 11.34 square kilometres (4.38 sq mi), and it encloses a lagoon with an area of 690 square kilometres (270 sq mi). Most of the land area is on the largest islet (motu) of Jaluit (10.4 km²). Jaluit is approximately 220 kilometres (140 mi) southwest of Majuro. Jaluit Atoll is a designated conservation area and Ramsar Wetland.

Micronesians settled the Marshall Islands in the 2nd millennium BC, but there are no historical or oral records of that period. Over time, the Marshall Island people learned to navigate over long ocean distances by canoe using traditional stick charts.

Pacific Islands Forum

The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) is an inter-governmental organization that aims to enhance cooperation between countries and territories of the Pacific Ocean. It was founded in 1971 as the South Pacific Forum (SPF). In 1999, the name was changed; "Pacific Islands Forum" is more inclusive of the Forum's Oceania-spanning membership of both north and south Pacific island countries, including Australia. It is an observer at the United Nations.

The Marshall Islands took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics, which were held in Beijing, China from 8 to 24 August 2008. The 2008 Summer Olympics were the Marshall Islands' first appearance at the Olympics. The delegation included five athletes, two in athletics, two in swimming, and one in taekwondo. The Marshall Islands failed to win an Olympic medal at these Games.

Death in Paradise is a British-French crime drama television series created by Robert Thorogood, starring Ben Miller, Kris Marshall and Ardal O'Hanlon. The programme is a joint UK and French production filmed on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe and broadcast on BBC One in the United Kingdom and France 2 in France. Tony deBrum Statesman of the Marshall Islands

Tony deBrum was a Marshallese politician and government minister. He helped organize the Marshall Islands' independence from the United States and later served as Foreign Minister of the Marshall Islands from 1979 to 1987, from 2008 to 2009 and from 2014 to 2016. He was the Minister in Assistance to the President of Marshall Islands from 2012 to 2014. He was particularly outspoken on climate change, and participated in numerous conferences and demonstrations, including the People's Climate March in New York City in September 2014.

David Kabua is a Marshallese politician and government minister. In 2012 and 2013 he was Minister of Health, and in 2014 he was made Minister of Internal Affairs in a cabinet reshuffle.

Hilda Heine Marshallese politician

Hilda Cathy Heine is a Marshallese educator and politician, currently serving as the eighth President of the Marshall Islands. Prior to assuming office, she served as the Minister of Education. She was the first individual in the Marshall Islands to earn a doctorate degree, and the founder of the women's rights group Women United Together Marshall Islands (WUTMI).

Amenta Matthew is a Marshallese politician. She has been a member of the Legislature of the Marshall Islands since 2015, representing the electorate of Utrik. She has been the Minister of Internal Affairs in the government of Hilda Heine since February 2016. She previously represented the same electorate from 2007 to 2011, and was Minister of Health under Presidents Litokwa Tomeing and Jurelang Zedkaia from 2008 to 2011. She is the second woman in the Marshall Islands to serve as a government minister.
