On 28 April 2021, a fire at a hostel in Riga, Latvia, killed nine people and wounded eight others. [2]

The hostel building was located in the commercial center of Riga, and marketed as Japanese Style Centrum Riga with twenty-two available rooms. However, local authorities stated after the fire that it was technically a private apartment and lacked the necessary fire safety and other permits. [3] The hostel was crowded and some guests who stayed there in late 2020 and early 2021 said the conditions inside were poor. [2] Reviews of the location mentioned small rooms, long term residents living alongside visiting tourists, people sleeping in the stairs and some rooms with no windows or ventilation. [4]
The local public broadcaster released that the hostel had been on the radar of the police and State Fire and Rescue Service since March 2021 due to fire concerns and non-compliance with COVID-19 restrictions, and the hostel had been issued a €500 fine. [3] In February 2021, officials who wanted to carry out a fire safety inspection were refused entry. [2] The day prior to the fire, another individual was found dead in the hostel after a suspected drug overdose. [4]
Shortly after 4:30 am the fire broke out in Japanese Style Centrum, an illegal hostel on the fifth floor of a block of flats in the Latvian capital Riga. [2] The fire brigade were called at 4:43 am. [2] By the time of the arrival of the Latvian State Fire and Rescue Service the fire had spread to the sixth floor and roof. [5] A survivor of the fire stated that they were awoken by an explosion and saw an orange light shining underneath the door to their room, and they had to evacuate by crawling on their hands and knees. The fire killed eight people - some of whom were foreign nationals - and injured another nine people with an additional fifteen individuals evacuated. [2] Deputy Police Chief Andrejs Grisins told reporters that due to the injuries sustained by those that died in the fire DNA tests would be needed to confirm their identities. [3]
The Mayor of Riga, Mārtiņš Staķis, said the unauthorised hostel would be closed down. [2] A criminal investigation into the fire was opened on the day it occurred. [6]

The Childers Palace Backpackers Hostel fire on 23 June 2000 killed 15 backpackers – nine women and six men – at the former Palace Hotel in the town of Childers, Queensland, Australia, which had been converted into a backpacker hostel. Robert Paul Long was arrested for lighting the fire and charged with two counts of murder and one count of arson. He was later sentenced to life imprisonment.

The Hotel Polen fire occurred on 9 May 1977 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The conflagration destroyed the Hotel Polen, a five-story hotel in the centre of the city which had been built in 1891, as well as the furniture store on the ground level and a nearby bookstore. Many of the tourists staying at the hotel jumped to their deaths trying to escape the flames. The Southwest Inn fire in Houston, Texas on May 31, 2013 was a fire in an Indian restaurant that spread to an adjoining hotel. The fire claimed the biggest casualty loss for the Houston Fire Department since its inception. Four firefighters were killed and 13 others were injured that day while fighting the five-alarm fire at the Southwest Inn located in Southwest Houston. On March 7, 2017, Captain Bill Dowling, who lost both his legs battling the fire in 2013, died of complications from his line-of-duty injuries.
On 21 November 2013 the roof of a Maxima shopping centre in the Zolitūde neighbourhood of Riga, Latvia, collapsed at 17:44 local time resulting in the deaths of 54 people, including three rescue workers, and injuries to another 41 people. An unknown number of people were able to leave the store on their own after the initial collapse. It was the worst disaster in Latvia since 1950, when the steamer Mayakovsky sank in Riga, killing 147 people. The disaster is often called Zolitūdes traģēdija by Latvian media outlets.

The Stephen Court fire was a major fire in a historical building, Stephen Court, that occurred in March 2010 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The fire started by a short circuit in the lifts at 2:15 p.m. IST, rapidly engulfing the fifth and sixth floors. A delay in the start of rescue operations was experienced due to the inadequate planning and preparedness of the fire-service department. Many occupants of the building were forced onto narrow ledges on the sides of the building. 43 people died in the fire. More than 300 firemen and 40 fire tenders were involved in bringing the blaze under control. Later a charge-sheet was prepared by the police which held the directors and caretakers responsible for the mishap. A probe by the government into this incident revealed that illegal construction of two floors and the lack of adequate fire-fighting equipment were major factors that contributed to the blaze getting out of control. In 2016, the Stephen Court Welfare Association, an unregistered company, reconstructed the building.
On 8 December 2019, a fire occurred at a factory building in Anaj Mandi area of Delhi, India. At least 43 people died and more than 56 were injured.
