Early life

Riniki was born and grew up in Guwahati to a well-known industrialist of that time Jadav Chandra Bhuyan. [3] [6]

She studied in St. Mary's High School, [3] Guwahati and then joined Cotton College and graduated in political science. [1] She then pursued LLB from Govt. Law College of Guwahati. [3] [7] [6]

She married Himanta Biswa Sarma, whom she met in Cotton College. [8] [9]

She has two children, Nandil Biswa Sarma and Sukanya Sarma. [9] [10]

Career

Riniki is the Chairman of her media house and holding company Pride East Entertainments, [4] which is a parent company of several channels. It includes, two news channels (News Live & Northeast East Live), [11] three entertainment channels (Ramdhenu, Rang & Indradhanu) and one Assamese News paper (Niyamiya Barta). [3] [12] [2]

Controversy

In September 2023, it was alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma through her company M/s Pride East Entertainments private limited, using the clout of her husband Himanta Biswa Sarma obtained grant of Rupees ten crore under the Kisan Sampada scheme. [13] [14]

The 2022 Silchar Floods were floods that occurred in the state of Assam, India beginning 19 June 2022, due to a breach of dyke of the Barak River at Bethkundi. The flooding affected 5.4 million people across 32 districts and caused the deaths of over 200 people across the effected districts. Silchar town, located just 1 km from the dyke was the worst affected, with 90 percent of the town underwater. While there are several reasons that caused the floods in the region to the extent that it did, there is a definite man-made aspect to the degree of damage that it caused. The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sharma also noted this in his address to the people.
