Ripu Daman Bevli (born 15 November 1987) is an environmentalist, and social activist. [1] He has been referred as the Plogman of India for his contributions to the littering crisis in India and for introducing the concept of plogging to India. [2] He is one of the ambassadors of FIT India Movement. [3] [4]

Early life

He started his career with information technology companies including HCL Infosystems and Akamai Technologies before moving into a sales role for the startup PacketZoom. [5]

Activism

In 2017, he started the Ploggers of India movement and quit his job in 2018. [2] The initiative was named initially as My city, My responsibility but later was changed to Ploggers of India. [6] His initial activities involved raising awareness about littering within the runners community and later he started to spread awareness about cleanliness, plogging and its requirements at schools and other institutions in collaboration with NGOs, under the Litter Free India movement, which combines the FIT India movement & Swachh Bharat missions. [7] [8] In September 2019, he was invited to 57th episode of "Mann Ki Baat", the radio program of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. [9] [10] [11] In the latter half of 2019, he started a campaign ‘Run to Make India Litter Free’ in collaboration with R|Elan where he executed clean up operations while running 1000 km across 50 cities of India, in September and October, 2019. [12] [13] The campaign's grand finale was attended by Kiren Rijiju at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi on 5 December 2019. [14]

In September 2020, Bevli was selected as one of the first 100 Global Impact Citizens by Global Impact Network, USA. [6] In March 2021, he has been awarded the Social Media Activist of The Year2020 by Cosmopolitan. [15] [16] In the same month, Bevli was declared as the Earth Day Network Star by Earthday.org. [17] Bevli has been mentioned for his works in ‘25 Best Never Rest Stories’ by Mercedes Benz India [18] and ‘5 Eco-Warriors Conquering Climate Change in India' by the Oxygen project. [19] During the Covid-19 Pandemic in 2020, Bevli initiated the "Plastic Upvaas" campaign to spread awareness about requirement of usage of reusable fabric masks instead of surgical masks to finally minimize the plastic usage. Open defecation is the human practice of defecating outside rather than into a toilet. People may choose fields, bushes, forests, ditches, streets, canals, or other open spaces for defecation. They do so either because they do not have a toilet readily accessible or due to traditional cultural practices. The practice is common where sanitation infrastructure and services are not available. Even if toilets are available, behavior change efforts may still be needed to promote the use of toilets. 'Open defecation free' (ODF) is a term used to describe communities that have shifted to using toilets instead of open defecation. This can happen, for example, after community-led total sanitation programs have been implemented.

Mann Ki Baat is an Indian radio programme hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in which he addresses Indians on All India Radio, DD National and DD News. Since the first show on 3 October 2014, there have been 110 episodes. The 100th episode of Mann Ki Baat was broadcast on 30 April 2023 and was broadcast worldwide.

Swachh Survekshan (lit. Sanskrit "Swachh" for Cleanliness and "Survekshan" for Survey - (सर्व + ईक्षण is an annual survey of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in villages, cities and towns across India. It was launched as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which aimed to make India clean and free of open defecation by 2 October 2019. The first survey was undertaken in 2016 and covered 73 cities ; by 2020 the survey had grown to cover 4242 cities and was said to be the largest cleanliness survey in the world. The surveys are carried out by Quality Council of India.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Plogging</span> Picking up litter while jogging

Plogging is a combination of jogging with picking up litter, merging the Swedish verbs plocka upp and jogga (jog) gives the new Swedish verb plogga, from which the word plogging derives. It started as an organized activity in Sweden around 2016 and spread to other countries in 2018, following increased concern about plastic pollution. As a workout, it provides variation in body movements by adding bending, squatting and stretching to the main action of running, hiking, or walking. An estimated 2,000,000 people plog daily in 100 countries and some plogging events have attracted over 3,000,000 participants.

Jitender Singh Shunty, is an Indian politician and social worker. Shunty was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly from Shahdara from Bhartiya Janta Party in 2013. He is the founder of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Seva Dal, an NGO that helps to cremate unclaimed bodies and immerse the ashes as guided by the Hindu and Sikh religion. National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for COVID-19 (NEGVAC) is an expert committee constituted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), India to provide advice and guidance on all aspects of COVID-19 vaccination. The committee is also responsible for prioritisation of population groups in the country, deciding procurement and inventory management procedure, selection and delivery of vaccines etc.

Shaheed Bhagat Singh Seva Dal is a non-governmental organisation based in Delhi, India. The organisation, named after Indian freedom fighter martyr Bhagat Singh works towards access and availability of emergency services. It is led by former MLA Jitender Singh Shunty. The organisation used to help with cremation of unclaimed bodies before COVID-19; however, after the start of the pandemic, it recorded a great increase in number of calls. The organisation started mobile fronts to keep bodies safe overnight by storing them in refrigerators in ambulances so that the bodies could be cremated next day.

Jagananna Gorumudda is a welfare program launched by the Government of Andhra Pradesh to improve the nutrition of students by providing quality nutritious food modifying the menu of mid day meal scheme.

Prabhaben Shah was an Indian social worker. In 2022, she was awarded Padma Shri by the Indian Government for her contribution in social work.

Swachh Andhra Corporation is an organization set up by the government of Andhra Pradesh. Its main job is to make the state cleaner and manage waste like trash and garbage.
