Rita Aciro is a Ugandan human rights defender and Executive Director for Uganda Women's Network (UWONET). She was the recipient of the 2021 European Union Human Rights Defenders Award. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
Aciro started her school life at Reparatrix Boarding school in Bugonge Entebbe, she thereafter joined Kololo secondary school for her secondary school education. [6]
She entered Uganda women's network (UWONET) as an intern in 1997. [6]
Aciro has worked with communities and governments in East Africa on issues concerning girls and women leadership, women land rights, combating gender based violence, women peace building, civic and voter education plus election observation. [2] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13]
She has over 20 years of experience being at the forefront of advocacy and campaigning on the rights of women and girls. [2] [7] [4]
In 2021 the European Union Human Rights Defenders Award, awarded annually to a Ugandan human rights defender, recognized her contribution to the rights of women and girls in Uganda and promotion of human rights and democratic values. [2] [3] [4] [1] [14]
Human rights in Uganda as a state relates to the difficulties in the achievement of international rights standards for all citizens. These difficulties centre upon the provision of proper sanitation facilities, internal displacement, development of adequate infrastructure, as well as the mistreatment of the LGBT community, women, and children. Nonetheless, Uganda is, as per the Relief Web sponsored Humanitarian Profile – 2012, making considerable developments in this area.

Women in Uganda have substantial economic and social responsibilities throughout Uganda's many traditional societies. Ugandan women come from a range of economic and educational backgrounds. Despite economic and social progress throughout the country, domestic violence and sexual assault remain prevalent issues in Uganda. Illiteracy is directly correlated to increased level of domestic violence. This is mainly because household members can not make proper decisions that directly affect their future plans. Government reports suggest rising levels of domestic violence toward women that are directly attributable to poverty.
The Center for Women's Global Leadership, based at Rutgers University, was founded in 1989 by Charlotte Bunch, the former executive director and an internationally renowned activist for women's human rights. Executive Director Krishanti Dharmaraj is also the founder of the Dignity Index and co-founder of WILD for Human Rights and the Sri Lanka Children's Fund. The former executive director, Radhika Balakrishnan, is now the faculty director, and a professor in the Department of Women's and Gender Studies at Rutgers, chair of the Board of the US Human Rights Network, and a board member of the Center for Constitutional Rights. Located on Douglass Residential College at Rutgers University, CWGL is a unit of International Programs within the School of Arts and Sciences and is a member of the Institute for Women's Leadership, a consortium of women's programs at Rutgers.
Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera is a Ugandan LGBT rights activist and the founder and executive director of the LGBT rights organization Freedom & Roam Uganda (FARUG). She received the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders in 2011 and the Right Livelihood Award in 2015.

Kwagala was awarded the 2020 Peace and Reconciliation Prize that was handed over to by H.E Albrecht Conze, the German Ambassador in Uganda, H.E Jules-Armand ANIAMBOSSOU who is the Ambassador of France to Uganda and Henry Oryem Okello the State Minister for Foreign Affairs at the 57th Anniversary celebrations of Elysee Treaty. On Women's Day in the year, 2022, she was named by the U. S Embassy in Uganda as one of Uganda's Outstanding women of Courage and she was awarded with EU Human Right Defenders Award 2022.
