Rob Shaw is an American film director, television director, commercial and music video director, and animator. [1] He is a graduate of University of the Arts (Philadelphia).

Career

In 2006, Rob Shaw joined the animation studio Bent Image Lab, [2] Portland, Oregon, where he began directing commercials, music videos, internet projects, and eventually long and short form television.

In 2007, he directed the music video for the song "I'm Impressed," [3] the debut single from the album "The Else" by the band They Might Be Giants. The video won a Gold Plaque at the 2008 Chicago International Film Festival (Television Section, Hugo Awards).

In 2008, Shaw directed a second music video for They Might Be Giants for the song "Computer Aided Design". Also in 2008, Shaw was principal director on a series of Bessie Award winning internet shorts for the British Columbia Dairy Association's campaign "Must Drink More Milk."

In 2012, Shaw created the animation Noon Moons for the Experimental Sound Studio, with a soundtrack by Terri Kapsalis and The Eternals. [4]

In 2014, Shaw directed Polariffic, an animated children's television special produced for Hallmark Channel by Bent Image Lab.

In 2018, Rob Shaw joined Bent Image Lab co-founder Chel White for retrospective and masterclass at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. [5]

Awards

The Machine - A modern-day cautionary fable about humans and machines, won Best Animated Short from the 2010 Atlanta Film Festival. [6] The film made its world premiere in the 2009 Anima Mundi [7] festival in Brazil.

Portlandia (TV series) "Rats" stop-motion segments for Independent Film Channel - “Best Television Program for Adults” 2012 Ottawa International Animation Festival. [8]

Polariffic - Hallmark Channel animated children's television special nominated for a 2015 Annie Awards [9] for Best Animated Special.

Commercial Clients

Rob Shaw's commercial clients include Koodo (“El Tabador” 5-year campaign), Gatorade, Hasbro, Cadbury, Alltel, Zune, Guitar Hero, and Kellogg's.

While the franchise is primarily a line of greeting cards, the characters also had a website that featured: e-cards, animated episodes, an "Ask hoops & yoyo" section, desktop and phone wallpapers, audio snippets, IM icons, fan photos, interactive monthly calendars, a blog, a podcast, games, and merchandise available for purchase. The plotlines for Hoops & Yoyo-related content center around the titular characters having fun and enjoying life, occasionally alongside their other friends. Chel White is an American film director, composer, screenwriter and visual effects artist. In his independent films and music videos, White is known for his stylized, often experimental use of images, unusual animation and narratives depicting an outsider's perspective. He often adopts darkly humorous and poetic sensibilities to explore topics of love, obsession and alienation; with dreams and the subconscious being his greatest influences. He describes his own work as “stories and images that reside on the brink of dreams, or linger on the periphery of distorted memories.” A Rockefeller Fellow, Chel White has made three films based on the work of Peabody Award-winning writer and radio personality Joe Frank.

Moongirl is an animated short produced in 2005 by Laika. It was written and directed by Henry Selick and features a score by They Might Be Giants. It is the first film, and currently the only short film, as well as the only non-stop-motion film, produced by the company.

The Uncluded was an American indie folk rap group, formed by rapper Aesop Rock and singer-songwriter Kimya Dawson. In 2013, they released an album titled Hokey Fright, through Rhymesayers Entertainment. The band name is a reference to the Michael Bernard Loggins book Imaginationally.

Jingle All the Way is a 2011 American stop motion animated children's television special produced for Hallmark Channel, directed by Chel White and produced at Bent Image Lab. The show is inspired by Hallmark Cards' 2010 stuffed toy Jingle the Husky Pup and its accompanying interactive storybook, Jingle All the Way. The special premiered on the Hallmark Channel on November 25, 2011.

<i>Le Building</i> 2005 French film

Le Building is a 2005 French animated short film directed by a team of final year students at Gobelins, l'École de l'image. The story depicts a series of slapstick accidents that cause destruction to a three-story apartment complex. Le Building's team of five directors is composed of Pierre Perifel and Olivier Staphylas, both of whom went on to become Annie Award-recognized animators at DreamWorks, Xavier Ramonède and Annie award-nominated Marco Nguyen, who have continued their careers with animation credits on various high-profile French productions, and Rémi Zaarour, who has since become a comic book artist, published under the pseudonym Pozla.

<i>Spirit World Field Guide</i> 2020 studio album by Aesop Rock

Spirit World Field Guide is the eighth studio album by American hip hop artist Aesop Rock. It was released on November 13, 2020, through Rhymesayers Entertainment. It acts as a "guide" to the Spirit World. The album was preceded by two singles: "The Gates" released on September 9, and "Pizza Alley" released on October 16, 2020. Both were released with music videos directed by Rob Shaw and featuring animation from Justin "Coro" Kaufman, who also designed the album's cover art. A third single and music video, "Coveralls", was released on November 13 alongside the album.
