Disappearance

He left his home on 23 June 2014 at 18:20 BST in a blue Nissan Micra. [5] The car was found in Stewart Street, just off Chester Road, the following day. [5] [2]

His family reported him missing three days later. [2]

Murder investigation

Northumbria Police considered the disappearance as a possible murder as early as July 2014. [2] [1] Two men, aged 39 and 55 were arrested and bailed by then. [2]

Crimestoppers UK offered a reward of £3,000 for information that might help in the murder investigation. [5]

In 2017, a reward of £10,000 was offered by Crimestoppers for information. [3] Nobody had been charged in relation to his disappearance by that date. [3]

In 2019, police released CCTV of people on Chester Road around the time of his disappearance. [4] By then, three men had been arrested, but none charged. [4]

In 2020, his daughter Paula Hutchinson issued an appeal for anyone with information about her father [7] to get in touch, including anonymously. [1] She said it was very much out of character for him to not be in contact with his family for such a long time as he loved them so much. [1] [6]

Ireland's Vanishing Triangle is a term commonly used in the Irish media when referring to a number of high-profile disappearances of Irish women from the late 1980s to the late 1990s. Several other women were also murdered within the triangle and their cases remain unsolved as well. All of the cases appeared to share some common characteristics. The women's ages range from their late-teens to late-30s, they disappeared inexplicably and suddenly, and no substantial clues or evidence of their fate has ever been found despite large scale searches and campaigns by the Gardaí to find them. Gardaí believe their remains are likely to be buried in remote fields, bogs and forests. The triangle is in the eastern part of the island, roughly the boundaries of Leinster, in an 80-mile area outside Dublin.
