Robert Merwald (born 1971 in Munich) is a German baritone active in opera, oratorio, and lied, primarily in Germany and Austria.

Biography

He began singing as a boy soprano with the Regensburger Domspatzen. From 1994 he studied singing at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München in Munich and attended masterclasses with Kurt Moll and Irwin Gage. While a member of the Prinzregententheater opera school and the Akademietheater he performed in works by Mozart, Nicolai and Henze. In 1998 he received a grant from the Deutscher Bühnenverein, and the following year won the Meistersänger-Wettbewerb singing competition in Nürnberg.

His operatic roles at the Tiroler Landestheater in Innsbruck have included the Father in Hänsel und Gretel , Daniello in Krenek's Jonny spielt auf , Silvano in Un ballo in maschera , Papageno in The Magic Flute and Albert in Werther . (He also sang Albert with Nationaltheater Mannheim.) Amongst the opera roles he has sung at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz are Schaunard in La bohème , Graf Dubarry in Die Dubarry , Maximilian in Candide , and Wilhelm Reischmann in Henze's Elegie für junge Liebende

He has sung as a soloist with the Schwäbischer Oratorienchor (Swabian Oratorio Choir) in the Dettingen Te Deum , Israel in Egypt , and Alexander's Feast by Handel as well as in Haydn's The Creation and Bach's Mass in B Minor .

In musical theatre, he appeared in the title role of Ludwig II at the Festspielhaus in Füssen, as José in Man of La Mancha at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz and as Sorel in The Consul at the Orangerie, Neustrelitz. [1]

Ortrun Wenkel is a German operatic contralto. She notably portrayed the role of Erda in the Bayreuth Jahrhundertring in 1976 and was awarded a Grammy Award as a Principal Soloist in 1983.

La passione di Gesù Cristo, is a 1794 Italian-language oratorio for soloists, choir and orchestra by Simon Mayr, to an adapted version of the famous libretto La passione di Gesù Cristo by Metastasio. Unlike Mayr's four Latin-language oratorios to librettos by Giuseppe Foppa for the Conservatorio dei Mendicanti, La passione was written for a church, and not limited to girls voices.

Che originali! is a 1798 farsa in one act by Simon Mayr for the Teatro San Benedetto. The libretto by Gaetano Rossi was based on an earlier French farce from 1779. It was the earliest of Mayr's works to be widely produced.

From 2007, he also performed roles such as Wagner's Siegmund and at international opera houses and festivals.

Ferry Gruber was an Austrian-German tenor in opera and operetta. A member of both the Bavarian State Opera and Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich for half a century, he focused on roles of the buffo genre and operetta. He made recordings, appeared on radio and television, performed internationally at major opera houses and festivals, and worked also as an operetta director and a private voice teacher. He was a favourite with the audience, and received the title Kammersänger.

Gisela Ehrensperger née Gisela Heuzeroth is a Swiss opera/operetta/musical theatre soprano. For 40 years, she was a permanent member of the ensemble of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, Munich.

Johannes Chum is an Austrian operatic tenor who has made an international career, first in concert, then in opera. Claus Guth German theatre director

Claus Guth is a German theatre director, focused on opera. He has directed operas at major houses and festivals, including world premieres such as works of the Munich Biennale, and Berio's Cronaca del luogo at the Salzburg Festival in 1999. Guth is particularly known for his opera productions of the works of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. He has received two Faust awards, for Daphne by Richard Strauss in 2010, and for Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande, both at the Oper Frankfurt.
