Robert Thompson MBE (born 24 May 1981) is a British chef. He was in 2007 the youngest British chef to be awarded a Michelin star [1] in his own right. He achieved this at Winteringham Fields, Lincolnshire before again earning a star at The Hambrough restaurant in Ventnor, on the Isle of Wight. Thompson left the Hambrough in 2013 [2] and in 2014 began working at the George Hotel in nearby Yarmouth. [3] In 2015, Thompson opened his first solo concept restaurant called Thompson's on the Isle of Wight in the town Newport. [4]

Career

Born in Bedfordshire England, Thompson was inspired to cook by brother Patrick and acquired a love of cooking at just 10 years old. After attending Thames Valley Community College, he started his cooking career with an apprenticeship at L'Ortolan in Reading then Sojourns at The Falcon and Chimney's Restaurant. He settled as a commis chef in 2001 at Winteringham Fields under Michelin chef Germain Schwabb winning the 2006 Acorn Award. [5] Thompson was named head chef two years later at the age of 23 after Germain retired. Here, he was awarded his first Michelin star and listed as chef to watch for the future by journalist Jay Rayner. [6]

After maintaining two Michelin stars and winning one of his own, Thompson departed for Waldo's at the Cliveden for one year, [7] but was recruited to be the face of a hotel business on the Isle of Wight at The Hambrough in Ventnor. [8] [9] Four months after taking on head chef duties in 2008, Thompson won the Isle of Wight its only Michelin star [10] and listed 20th best restaurant in the UK by the Good Food Guide as well as 18th in the Sunday Times Hardens Top 100.

Thompson has now opened his first solo restaurant on the Isle of Wight in the town of Newport named Thompson's Restaurant. [11]

He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2023 Birthday Honours for services to hospitality, tourism and charity. [12]

Thornton's was a restaurant that was housed, in the period 2002–2016, in the Fitzwilliam Hotel, St. Stephen's Green, County Dublin, Ireland. It was previously located on Portobello Road since 1989. It became a fine dining restaurant, that held a one-star Michelin rating in the periods 1996-2000 and 2006–2015. In the period 2001-2005 it held a two-star rating. The restaurant closed on 29 October 2016. The space is now occupied by Glovers Alley.

The Box Tree is a restaurant located in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England. Owned by Adam Frontal, Yorkshire businessman, who is operating the restaurant with an emphasis of remaining very current within the fine dining offering and experience. Current Executive Chef, Brayden Davies, has been leading the kitchen since the beginning of 2023, having worked at multiple Michelin star restaurants, growing its ever strong reputation and now currently offers a new tasting menu on a monthly basis. The Box Tree was previously operated by chef Simon Gueller and his wife, Rena, from 2005 to late 2022. Under their management the restaurant has been redecorated, although elements from the original owners of the restaurant remain. Reception by food critics has improved over the years; the restaurant held a single Michelin star until 2019 and three AA rosettes. A sister company is also run by the chef, called Box Tree Events.

Le Champignon Sauvage is a restaurant located in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. As of 2008, the restaurant holds two stars in the Michelin Guide. In 1987 the restaurant was opened by husband and wife, David and Helen Everitt-Mattias, initially for a period of three years, but the couple stayed with the restaurant due to high interest rates. To keep costs down, David, the head chef, incorporated cheaper cuts of meat and foraged ingredients on the menu. As of 1 October 2018, the restaurant has been downgraded to 1 Michelin star for the 2019 guide. It is currently the only Michelin starred restaurant in Gloucestershire.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hibiscus (restaurant)</span> Restaurant in London

Hibiscus was a London restaurant which was owned and run by French chef Claude Bosi. It was opened in 2000 in Ludlow, Shropshire, and won its first Michelin star within a year, and a second in the 2004 Guide. In July 2006, Bosi and his wife Claire announced that they were to sell the location in Ludlow and move closer to London. The property was sold to Alan Murchison, and Bosi purchased a new site on Maddox Street in London. The restaurant closed in 2016.

Angela Hartnett at The Connaught, also known as MENU, was a restaurant owned by Gordon Ramsay Holdings and run by chef Angela Hartnett. It was located within The Connaught in Mayfair, London. The restaurant was opened following Ramsay's successful opening of Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's, within the Claridge's hotel, which is owned by the same equity group. Ramsay had originally been asked to move Restaurant Gordon Ramsay into the space, but suggested that Hartnett should run a new operation there instead. The restaurant was awarded a Michelin star in the 2004 guide and held it until it closed in 2007.

Vineet Bhatia is an Indian chef, restaurateur, author, and media personality. He was the first Indian chef to be awarded a Michelin star. He opened two Rasoi restaurants, the first in Chelsea, London in 2004, and the second in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2008. Both restaurants received Michelin stars, in 2006 and 2009 respectively, making Bhatia the first and only chef of Indian origin to receive two Michelin stars. Currently, he has eleven restaurants, including his signature restaurant "KAMA by Vineet" in the dining hall in Harrods in London, and appears as a judge on Netflix show The Final Table and judge-host on MasterChef India. He has written two cookbooks, Rasoi: New Indian Kitchen and My Sweet Kitchen.
