Rochell & the Candles were a one hit wonder group from Los Angeles California. They had a hit in 1961 with "Once Upon A Time".

Background

The group came together in 1958 in Los Angeles. The line up of all males then was Rochell Henderson who sang lead and tenor, Johnny Wyatt who was lead and first tenor, Melvin Sasso who was tenor, and T.C. Henderson who sang bass. The two Hendersons who both came from Louisiana were not related. Rochell Henderson was once in a group called The Chosen Gospel singers which included Lou Rawls. [1]

Their hit "Once Upon a Time" made it to number 20 in the R&B charts and number 26 in the pop charts. [2] It spent a total of three weeks in the pop charts. [3]

In July, 1962, they released "Each Night" bw "Turn Her Down" on Challenge 9158. The A side was composed by Willie Morris and the B side by K. C. Reeth and Robt. J. Hafner. [4] [5]

Their hit appears on the 16 All Time Great Rare Original Oldies various artists compilation issued on Del-Fi Records. [6]

Later years

Between 1966 and 1967, Johnny Wyatt had some solo singles released on the Bronco label. [7] He died in 1983. [8]

Challenge Records was founded in Los Angeles in 1957 by cowboy singer Gene Autry and former Columbia Records A&R representative Joe Johnson. Autry's involvement with the label was short-lived as he sold his interest to the remaining partners in October 1958.

The Danleers were an American doo-wop group formed in Brooklyn, New York in 1958. The group's original and most famous lineup consisted of Jimmy Weston, Johnny Lee, Willie Ephraim, Nat McCune, and Roosevelt Mays. One of many streetcorner vocal groups in Brooklyn, they rose to prominence in 1958 on the strength of the single "One Summer Night", written by their manager, Danny Webb, who also named the group. The single was one of the biggest hits of that year and sold over one million copies. Further releases were not so successful and the group mostly dissolved by the mid-1960s. It continued to tour for several decades with Weston as the main original member.

Impact Records was a California based record label run by CT Records creator, Tony Hilder in the 1960s. This label released some surf records by The Crestwoods, Dave Myers and The Surftones, The Ramblers and The New Breed and The Revels. The Revels were known for the hits "Comanche" and "Intoxica".

Gil Bernal was an American singer and session musician. His saxophone can be heard on recordings such as "Searchin'" by The Coasters. Robert Hafner was an American record producer and songwriter who, along with Tony Hilder, was responsible for many of the surf records that came out in California in the 1960s including "Vesuvius" and "Intoxica" by The Revels. He also contributed to the music for the film The Exiles. Music historian and author Robert Dalley said that he had a definite place in surf history.

Otha Lee Moore, better known as Tiny Topsy, was an American R&B singer. The music journalist, Mark Lamarr, noted "Tiny in the same spirit you'd call a bald man curly, Tiny Topsy definitely had the lungpower to match her name." She was five feet tall and weighed 250 pounds.

The Capris were a 1950s doo-wop group from Philadelphia who started out in their teens. They consisted of four males and a female. They recorded singles for the Gotham Records label. The song that they are most known for is "God Only Knows".

Ruben Wright is a musician and former bandleader from Philadelphia. He had an R&B Top 30 hit with "I'm Walking Out On You". He is also a songwriter. He also wrote the regional hit "God Only Knows" for The Capris in 1954.

"God Only Knows" was a regional hit for Philadelphia Doo wop group The Capris. It was their debut single for the group and was written by Ruben Wright. The song also had a dramatic effect on Motown singer Marvin Gaye. It has been covered by other artists as well.

The Four Larks were an R&B group that recorded from the 1960s through to the 1970s on various record labels. Their singles have been released on at least ten different record labels. They had a hit on the pop charts with "It's Unbelievable".
