The Rockford Pro-Am Golf Tournament, also known as the Rockford ProAm, was a one-day tournament featuring golf professionals, sponsors and amateur golf enthusiasts in order to raise funds for special organizations. [1] It was the longest free-standing pro-am (not attached to the PGA or LPGA) event in the United States. [1] It was normally held in July following the John Deere Classic. More commonly known as just the Rockford Pro-Am, the event celebrated its 42nd anniversary in 2018.

There are normally 20-25 professionals are teamed up with teams of four amateurs.

History

The pro-am was started as a fund raiser for the three Rockford area hospitals in 1977 — Rockford Memorial Hospital, St. Anthony Hospital and SwedishAmerican Hospital and was initially hosted by the Rockford Country Club from 1977 to 1996. [4] This was changed to being a benefit for non-profit organizations, three picked per year by the organizers.

Many celebrities and professional golfers have come to the event. [3] For a few years in the early 1980s, comedian and ultimate golf enthusiast Bob Hope would come to entertain at a benefit gala at the then-newly opened MetroCentre then play in the pro-am the next day. [2] Other entertainers who participated included Hope's long-time friend and fellow comedian George Burns and the star of TV's Wonder Woman Lynda Carter. [5]

Other pros who made appearances include Gary Player, Chi-Chi Rodríguez, Jim Thorpe, Lee Trevino and LPGA veteran Nancy Lopez.

In September 2022, program organizers announced that all future Rockford Pro-Am tournaments would be discontinued, citing the inability to finance the appearance of pro golfers at events [6] and a lack of sponsorships. After 43 years, the Rockford Pro-Am was the longest-running individual event of its kind in the country, [7] traditionally held at Aldeen Golf Club, 1902 Reid Farm Rd. in Rockford. The tournament was last played in 2019, and was canceled due to the 2020 pandemic prior to the official closing announcement in 2022.

The Epson Tour Championship is an annual golf tournament for professional women golfers on the Epson Tour, the LPGA's developmental tour. The event was played at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Florida from 2008 to 2019, except for 2016. In 2008 and 2009 the tournament was played on the Jones Course. Beginning in 2010, it has been played on the Champions Course. The 2016 event was played at Alaqua Country Club in Longwood, Florida due to course conditions at LPGA International caused by Hurricane Matthew. The tournament began as a celebrity-only tournament in 2013 and in 2017, the tournament was made a PGA Tour Champions Challenge Season event. The 2019 LPGA of Korea Tour was the 42nd season of the LPGA of Korea Tour, the professional golf tour for women operated by the Korea Ladies Professional Golf' Association. The season began at Twin Doves Golf Club in Vietnam in December 2018, and ended at Woojeong Hills Country Club in Cheonan.

The Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions is a women's professional golf tournament on the LPGA Tour in Florida. It debuted in 2019 at the Four Seasons Golf & Sports Club Orlando in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The tournament field is limited to winners on LPGA Tour events in the previous two years. As is the case in the past, there is also a pro-am and celebrity tournament, like its predecessor. The top amateurs during the midweek pro-am are invited to play in the main tournament. Each professional is paired with two celebrities or amateurs in the groupings, and celebrities change per round. A Stableford-based system is used for the celebrities and amateurs.
