He is the first Mexico-born boxer in history to win world titles in four different weight classes, having held the WBC super bantamweight title from 1997 to 2000, the WBC featherweight twice between 2001 and 2003, the unified WBC and IBF super featherweight titles in 2004, and the WBC super lightweight title from 2011 to 2012.

Canelas is a town and seat of the municipality of Canelas, in the state of Durango, northwestern Mexico. Canelas is also known for a wedding that took place, that of the famous Mexican drug lord Joaquín Guzmán Loera and Emma Coronel Aispuro. Reports indicate that this wedding took place in 2007 in Canelas. As of 2010, the town had a population of 734.

Federal Highway 36 is a free part of the federal highways corridors of Mexico. The highway construction is entirely within the state of Durango. The official start of the highway indicates it begins in the city of Topia then runs eastward to the town of Los Herrera. However, the paved and graded portion of the road does not go to Topia. Along the graded and paved road at a point about 96 km (60 mi) from Santiago de Papasquiaro a narrow and ungraded road leads off of Fed. 36 and extends 28 km (17 mi) to Topia, Durango. The road from Fed. 36 to Topia is a narrow dirt road. The paved and graded road system continues past that intersection and has been extended year by year in a westward direction to the crest of the Sierra Madre Occidental and down the western slope of the Sierras, following the drainage of the Topia River, past Canales, Durango and then on to the end of construction in a dead end about 24 km. beyond Canales at the remote village of La Angostura. This village just happens to be the home of Ines Coronel Barreras, a cattle rancher and Sinaloa drug lord, who is the father of Emma Coronel Aispuro, the Mexican beauty queen and wife of the internationally notorious drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, currently indicted and in jail in the United States for drug related crimes. This terminus of the graded and paved road is only 32 km (20 mi) by direct line from Tamazula de Victoria, Durango. It is unknown whether there will be further road construction beyond La Angostura to Tamazula de Victoria in the coming years though that would be feasible from an engineering standpoint. Until the completion of the highway construction an alternative route which is ungraded branches off the paved road on the crest of the mountains and continues on to highways in the state of Sinaloa. Those routes are all noted below.

Inés Coronel Barreras is a Mexican convicted drug lord and former high-ranking leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, a criminal group based in Sinaloa. He is the father-in-law of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, the former leader of the cartel and once considered Mexico's most-wanted man. Coronel Barreras was arrested by Mexican security forces in Agua Prieta, Sonora on 30 April 2013. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison on April 28, 2017 for drug trafficking and illegal possession of firearms.
Sergio Alberto Estrada Cajigal Ramírez is a Mexican politician, who was Governor of the state of Morelos for the National Action Party from 2000 - 2006, and who served two periods as mayor of Cuernavaca. His grandfather Vicente Estrada Cajigal was the governor of Morelos from 1930-1935. In 2009 he left the NAP and in 2012 he supported the candidate for Governorship of PRI. Since leaving the governorship he has been embroiled in some highly publicized legal and political controversies, but has not been indicted for any wrong-doings.

Zeferino Peña Cuéllar, also known as Don Zefe, is a Mexican suspected drug lord and high-ranking member of the Gulf Cartel, a criminal group based in Tamaulipas, Mexico. He was part of the cartel during the 1990s, and was a trusted enforcer of former kingpins Gilberto García Mena and Osiel Cárdenas Guillén. From 1999 to 2001, he served as the municipal police chief of Miguel Alemán. Peña Cuéllar reportedly relied on corrupt Mexican military officials to run drug trafficking activities in Tamaulipas. This group of military officers would later become the foundation for the creation of Los Zetas, the Gulf Cartel's former paramilitary group originally made up of ex-soldiers. In the cartel, he headed organized crime operations in the municipalities of Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, Camargo, Miguel Alemán, Mier, and Guerrero.
