Rodney Watson (born July 18, 1960) is an American basketball coach and the former head coach for the University of Southern Indiana. Watson succeeded Rick Herdes, who resigned following a scandal that ultimately resulted in suspension from postseason play for one year.

Early life

Watson was born in Paris, Illinois and graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1982. Rodney and his wife Carol live in Carterville, Illinois, where their kids attend school. Blake (16), Olivia (16), Zach (20), and Ashley (21). Ashley was a member of the Saluki Shaker dance team at Southern Illinois. Zach is currently a member of the USI track team in which he competes in the high jump.

Coaching career

Watson's coaching career began in 1982 at Coulterville High School in Coulterville, Illinois, where he led the team to an Illinois high school regional championship. In 1984, he became the head coach at Madison High School in Madison, Illinois, where he coached the Trojans to an appearance in the Illinois high school Elite Eight.

Collegiate assistant

In 1986, Watson began a two-year stay as an assistant the University of Nebraska-Omaha men's basketball team, before becoming an assistant coach at Southern Illinois University men's team in 1988 and remained until after the 2008–2009 season. [1] During his twenty-one seasons with the Salukis, he helped coach the team to a 430–238 record, eleven Missouri Valley Conference championships, and nine NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament appearances (the Salukis had only had one previously)--including six in his last seven years. While at SIU, Watson worked under head coaches Rich Herrin, Bruce Weber, Matt Painter, and Chris Lowery. [2] Neil Hayes, writing for The Chicago Sun-Times credited Watson with maintaining continuity for the team across the tenures of four different head coaches. [1]

He was considered for a position as men's basketball coach at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 2007. [3]

Southern Indiana

On May 22, 2009, Watson was hired to fill a vacancy created by the departure of Rick Herdes, who resigned following a scandal involving multiple NCAA rules violations by USI. [4] [5] Despite a one-year prohibition on postseason play imposed by the GLVC, Watson led the team to a 23–0 start and a #2 ranking in the NABC Division II Top 25 Poll making it the best start for a first-year coach at USI. During the 2013–2014, Watson led USI to a GLVC Tournament Championship. USI also completed a season sweep of Bellarmine for the first time since the 2004–05 season.

Watson retired following the 2019–20 season. His teams compiled a record of 251–82 over his eleven seasons. [6]

Post-coaching

On November 4, 2020, Watson was named as a radio analyst on Saluki men's basketball broadcasts, splitting those duties with Greg Starrick. [7] He moved into the primary analyst's role for the 2021–22 season.

They finished the season 17–16, 9–9 in MVC play to finish in a tie for third place. In the MVC tournament, they defeated Loyola–Chicago in the quarterfinals before losing to Illinois State in the semifinals.

The Salukis, led by sixth-year head coach Barry Hinson, played their home games at the SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois as members of the Missouri Valley Conference. They finished the season 20–13, 11–7 in MVC play to finish in second place. In the MVC tournament, they defeated Missouri State in the quarterfinals before losing to Illinois State in the semifinals. Despite winning 20 games, the Salukis did not participate in a postseason tournament.

The 2018–19 Southern Illinois Salukis men's basketball team represented Southern Illinois University Carbondale during the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Salukis, led by seventh-year head coach Barry Hinson, played their home games at the SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois as members of the Missouri Valley Conference. They finished the season 17–15 overall, 10–8 in MVC play, finishing in a tie for third place. As the No. 3 seed in the MVC tournament, the Salukis were upset by No. 6 seed Northern Iowa in the quarterfinals.

Bryan Mullins is a former American basketball player and current college basketball coach. He is currently head coach of the Southern Illinois Salukis men's basketball team.

The Salukis were led by first-year head coach Bryan Mullins and played their home games at the Banterra Center in Carbondale, Illinois as members of the Missouri Valley Conference. They finished the season 16–16, 10–8 in MVC play to finish in fifth place. They lost in the quarterfinals of the MVC tournament to Bradley.

Stanley Gouard is an American college basketball coach, currently head coach for the University of Southern Indiana (USI). Gouard also played for USI, where he was twice named NCAA Division II National Player of the Year.

The 2019–20 Missouri Valley Conference men's basketball season began with practices in October 2019, followed by the start of the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season on November 5, 2019. Conference play began in late December 2019 and concluded in March with the Missouri Valley Conference tournament at Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

The 2022–23 Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles men's basketball team represented the University of Southern Indiana in the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Screaming Eagles, led by third-year head coach Stan Gouard, played their home games at Screaming Eagles Arena in Evansville, Indiana as members of the Ohio Valley Conference. They finished the season 16–17, 9–9 in OVC play to finish in a tie for sixth place. As the No. 7 seed in the OVC tournament, they lost to SIU Edwardsville in the first round. The Screaming Eagles received an invitation to the College Basketball Invitational as the No. 15 seed. There they lost to San Jose State in the first round.
