Roel van Helden (born 2 September 1980) is a Dutch musician known mostly for his work as a drummer for German power metal band Powerwolf. [1]
Roel was born in 1980 in a small village called Lottum in The Netherlands. He started playing drums at the age of 11, inspired by his older brother Ruud, and took lessons from teachers such as Duncan Tilmans. He played in various Punk and Metal bands throughout his teens. In his early twenties his musical career got more serious when he started studying drums at the Conservatory in Tilburg (NL) Roel has toured and recorded albums with the bands Sun Caged, Delphian & Subsignal. This all led to joining the German Metal band Powerwolf in 2011 who are preaching the Metal Mass with great succes around the world.
He played in DVPLO, Gramoxone, Marcel Coenen, My Favorite Scar, Subsignal, and Sun Caged. He currently plays in Powerwolf, Delphian, Lites over Fenix and System Pilot.
He joined Powerwolf replacing Tom Diener in 2011. [2]

Sun Caged was a progressive metal band originating in the Netherlands. Sun Caged was formed by ex-Aura and Lemur Voice guitarist Marcel Coenen and drummer Dennis Leeflang in the spring of 1999. Taking influences from artists in the metal genre such as Dream Theater, and Iron Maiden. They have performed as support acts for bands such as Vanden Plas, Queensrÿche, Spock's Beard, and Fates Warning. Currently, the band has three albums, a self-titled studio album which was released on October 22, 2003, a second album, Artemisia, which was released on March 23, 2007 and the third album was released in 2011 and is called The Lotus Effect. All three albums received critical acclaim from the media.
Artemesia is the second studio album by the Dutch progressive metal band Sun Caged, released on March 23, 2007 by Lion Music. The album features the band's current lineup, which has steadied after many replacements during the years of their productions. The Japanese version of the album features a cover song; "Land of Confusion" by progressive rock band Genesis.
Powerwolf is a German power metal band founded in 2004 in Saarbrücken by members of Red Aim. The band consists of vocalist Karsten Brill as "Attila Dorn", lead guitarist Benjamin Buss as "Matthew Greywolf", bassist/rhythm guitarist David Vogt as "Charles Greywolf", keyboardist Christian Jost as "Falk Maria Schlegel" and drummer Roel van Helden. The group uses religious themes and images, contrary to traditional power metal music, as well as corpse paint, gothic-tinged compositions and songs about werewolf and vampire legends.
Subsignal is a German progressive rock band. The band was originally formed as a side project by Sieges Even members Arno Menses (vocals) and Markus Steffen (guitars). After their main band disbanded, Menses and Steffen recruited former Dreamscape members Ralf Schwager (bass), and David Bertok (keyboards). Sun Caged drummer Roel van Helden was Subsignal's first drummer, but was replaced in 2012 by Dreamscape drummer Danilo Batdorf.
The Lotus Effect is the third studio album by the Dutch progressive metal band Sun Caged, released on 17 June 2011 by Lion Music. The album features the same lineup as their previous album Artemisia except for the loss of bassist Roel Vink, who was replaced by Daniel Kohn. Writing and arranging music for the album began almost immediately after release of Artemisia in 2007, with instrumental recording beginning in late 2008. Like their previous work, this album contains many complex musical compositions, with tracks 8–14 on disc forming the 25-minute medley titled "Ashtamangala "
Preachers of the Night is the fifth studio album by German power metal band Powerwolf. It was released on 19 July 2013. The band wrote it during 2012 and began recording it in December of the same year at the Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Blood of the Saints is the fourth studio album by German power metal band Powerwolf, released in 2011. It is the band's first album with songs that had music videos, made for "We Drink Your Blood" and "Sanctified with Dynamite". In addition to recording at Studio Fredman, Sweden, the band recorded some parts of the album in the 12th-century Deutschherrenkapelle chapel in Saarbrücken.
Blessed & Possessed is the sixth studio album by German power metal band Powerwolf, released on 17 July 2015 by Napalm Records. The band wrote it during 2014 and began recording it in January 2015 at the Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden, and was produced by Fredrik Nordström. It was mastered in the Fascination Street Studios by Jens Bogren.
The Sacrament of Sin is the seventh studio album by German power metal band Powerwolf, released on 20 July 2018 by Napalm Records. The band wrote it during 2017 and began recording it in January 2018 at the Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden. It was Jens Bogren's first production work for Powerwolf. Joost van den Broek assisted the band with orchestras. Musically, the album is different than previous recordings. The expression of the organ has changed, the orchestra has been added and unusual elements such as bagpipes or flute and the band recorded a ballad accompanied by the piano for the first time in its history. The main theme of the album from the point of view of lyrics is sin, but it is not a concept album.
Metallum Nostrum is a cover album by German power metal band Powerwolf, originally released on 17 July 2015 as a bonus disc to Blessed & Possessed. It was re-released separately on 11 January 2019.
The Metal Mass – Live is the second video album by German power metal band Powerwolf. The album contains live footage of three shows: Masters of Rock 2015, Summer Breeze 2015, Oberhausen Turbinenhalle, music videos to "Amen & Attack", "Army of the Night", "We Drink Your Blood" and "Sanctified with Dynamite", a festival documentation "A Day at Summer Breeze" and a tour documentation movie "Kreuzweg – Of Wolves and Men".
