Roger Cador (born January 30, 1952) is an American college baseball coach who most recently served as head coach of the Southern Jaguars baseball team. He was named to that position prior to the 1985 season. [3] He is also a member of a Major League Baseball task force to improve African-American participation in baseball. [4] [5]

Playing career

Cador played baseball and basketball at Southern, leading the Jaguars in hitting in his junior season of 1972 at .393. He would be drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 10th round of the 1973 MLB Draft and play five seasons in the Braves organization, reaching Class-AAA in his final season of 1977 as an outfielder. Coaching career

He returned to Southern in 1978 as an assistant baseball coach. He moved to assistant basketball coach of the Jaguars in 1980, where he remained four seasons before earning the head coaching job of the baseball team in 1985. Cador's accomplishments include conference championships, 13 SWAC Coach of the Year awards, NCAA regional appearances, and three NCAA play-in appearances. Cador has also produced 35 players who played professional, or became coaches, umpires, or scouts, including 23 players drafted from 2001–2004. [3]

Cador tells a story that when he took over as head coach, the Jaguars had virtually no equipment or facilities. He arranged a scrimmage with the Braves, then managed by his friend Dusty Baker, and returned to Baton Rouge with a truck full of equipment for his team. He has also spearheaded efforts to build an on-campus stadium, complete with lights, and ground was recently broken on a facility to house space exclusively for the Jaguars baseball team. [6] To increase exposure, he has organized the Urban Invitational featuring Historically Black Colleges and Universities televised on MLB Network. [7]

Cador completed his career at Southern with 14 SWAC titles, 11 NCAA tournament appearances, [1] and two black national titles (in 2003 and 2005). [2] He also held the distinctions of having coached the first Golden Spikes Award winner and Dick Howser Trophy to have played at a predominantly black school (Rickie Weeks Jr. in 2003) and the first NCAA Division I tournament game win by a black school. The Jackson State–Southern football rivalry, often informally called the BoomBox Classic, is a college football rivalry between the Tigers of Jackson State University (JSU) and the Jaguars of Southern University (SU). An annual conference game between two historically black universities in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), its location usually rotates between JSU's Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson, Mississippi and SU's A. The SWAC Championship Game, officially the Cricket Wireless SWAC Championship Game, is an American college football game that is held annually on the first Saturday in December by the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) to determine its football champion. The game pits the champion of the Eastern Division against the champion of the Western Division in a game that follows the conclusion of the regular season. From 2015 onward, the winner of the game has represented the SWAC in the Celebration Bowl. Kerrick Jackson is an American baseball coach and former pitcher, who is the current head baseball coach of the Missouri Tigers. He played college baseball at St. Louis Community College, Bethune–Cookman and Nebraska from 1994 to 1997. He then served as the head coach of the Southern Jaguars (2018–2020) and the Memphis Tigers (2023). He also served as the President of the MLB Draft League in 2021.

The 2019–20 Southern Jaguars basketball team represented Southern University in the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Jaguars, led by second-year head coach Sean Woods, played their home games at the F. G. Clark Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They finished the season 17–15, 13–5 in SWAC play to finish in second place. They defeated Alabama State in the quarterfinals of the SWAC tournament and were set to face Texas Southern in the semifinals until the tournament was cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Wytheville Cardinals were a minor league baseball team based in Wytheville, Virginia, United States. From 1957 to 1959, the "Cardinals" played as members of the Class D level Appalachian League, serving as a minor league affiliate of their namesake, the St. Louis Cardinals.

The 1946 Southern Jaguars football team was an American football team that represented Southern University as a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) during the 1946 college football season. In their 11th season under head coach Ace Mumford, the Jaguars compiled a 9–2–1 record, won the SWAC championship, shut out four of 12 opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 390 to 95.
