Roger Cador (born January 30, 1952) is an American college baseball coach who most recently served as head coach of the Southern Jaguars baseball team. He was named to that position prior to the 1985 season. [3] He is also a member of a Major League Baseball task force to improve African-American participation in baseball. [4] [5]

College baseball is baseball that is played on the intercollegiate level at institutions of higher education. In comparison to football and basketball, college competition in the United States plays a smaller role in developing professional players, as baseball's professional minor leagues are more extensive, with a greater history of supplying players to the top professional league. Moving directly from high school to the professional level is more common in baseball than in football or basketball. However, if players do opt to enroll at a four-year college to play baseball, they must complete three years to regain professional eligibility, unless they reach age 21 before starting their third year of college. Players who enroll at junior colleges regain eligibility after one year at that level. In the most recently completed 2017 season, there were 298 NCAA Division I teams in the United States.

The Southern Jaguars baseball team is a varsity intercollegiate athletic team of Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States. The team is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. The team plays its home games at Lee–Hines Field in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The 1985 NCAA Division I baseball season, play of college baseball in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) began in the spring of 1985. The season progressed through the regular season and concluded with the 1985 College World Series. The College World Series, held for the thirty ninth time in 1985, consisted of one team from each of eight regional competitions and was held in Omaha, Nebraska at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium as a double-elimination tournament. Miami (FL) claimed the championship for the second time.

Playing career

Cador played baseball and basketball at Southern, leading the Jaguars in hitting in his junior season of 1972 at .393. He would be drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 10th round of the 1973 MLB Draft and play five seasons in the Braves organization, reaching Class-AAA in his final season of 1977 as an outfielder. Coaching career

He returned to Southern in 1978 as an assistant baseball coach. He moved to assistant basketball coach of the Jaguars in 1980, where he remained four seasons before earning the head coaching job of the baseball team in 1985. Cador's accomplishments include conference championships, 13 SWAC Coach of the Year awards, NCAA regional appearances, and three NCAA play-in appearances. Cador has also produced 35 players who played professional, or became coaches, umpires, or scouts, including 23 players drafted from 2001–2004. [3]

Cador tells a story that when he took over as head coach, the Jaguars had virtually no equipment or facilities. He arranged a scrimmage with the Braves, then managed by his friend Dusty Baker, and returned to Baton Rouge with a truck full of equipment for his team. He has also spearheaded efforts to build an on-campus stadium, complete with lights, and ground was recently broken on a facility to house space exclusively for the Jaguars baseball team. [6] To increase exposure, he has organized the Urban Invitational featuring Historically Black Colleges and Universities televised on MLB Network. [7]

Cador completed his career at Southern with 14 SWAC titles, 11 NCAA tournament appearances, [1] and two black national titles (in 2003 and 2005). [2] He also held the distinctions of having coached the first Golden Spikes Award winner to have played at a predominantly black school (Rickie Weeks Jr. in 2003) and the first NCAA Division I tournament game win by a black school. The Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament decides the conference baseball championship of the NCAA Division I Southwestern Athletic Conference. The top four finishers in each conference division participate in the two-bracket, double-elimination tournament which, since 2014, has been played at Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.

The NCAA Division I Baseball Championship is held each year from May through June and features 64 college baseball teams in the United States, culminating in the eight-team College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska. Vanderbilt is the 2019 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament champion, defeating runner-up Michigan 8-2 in Game 3 to win the 2019 College World Series championship finals.

Golden Spikes Award

The Golden Spikes Award is bestowed annually to the best amateur baseball player in the United States. The award, created by USA Baseball and sponsored by the Major League Baseball Players Association, was first presented in 1978. It is given to an amateur player who best exhibits and combines "exceptional on-field ability and exemplary sportsmanship." The award is considered the most prestigious in amateur baseball.

Arnett William "Ace" Mumford was an American football coach. He served as the head football coach at historically black colleges and universities in Texas and Louisiana from 1924 to 1961, compiling a career college football record of 233–85–23. His head coaching positions were at Jarvis Christian College (1924–1926), Bishop College (1927–1929), Texas College (1931–1935), and Southern University (1936–1961). He has been inducted into at least eight halls of fame for his coaching accomplishments.

SWAC Championship Game

The SWAC Championship Game is an American college football game that is held annually on the first Saturday in December by the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) to determine its football champion. The game pits the champion of the Eastern Division against the champion of the Western Division in a game that follows the conclusion of the regular season. From 2015 onward, the winner of the game has represented the SWAC in the Celebration Bowl. Since 2013, Toyota has been the title sponsor and the contest is officially named the Toyota SWAC Football Championship.

They finished the season 15–18, 10–8 in SWAC play to finish in fifth place. Due to Grambling State's Academic Progress Rate violations and subsequent postseason ineligibility, the Jaguars received the No. 4 seed in the SWAC Tournament. They defeated Jackson State in the quarterfinals before losing to Arkansas–Pine Bluff in the semifinals.

The 2018–19 Southern Jaguars basketball team represents Southern University during the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Jaguars, led by head coach Sean Woods, play their home games at the F. G. Clark Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
