Oglala Lakota County is a county in southwestern South Dakota, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,672. Oglala Lakota County does not have a functioning county seat; Hot Springs in neighboring Fall River County serves as its administrative center. The county was created as a part of the Dakota Territory in 1875, although it remains unorganized. Its largest community is Pine Ridge.

Timothy Peter Johnson is a retired American lawyer and politician who served as a United States senator from South Dakota from 1997 to 2015. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as the United States representative for South Dakota's at-large congressional district from 1987 to 1997 and in the state legislature from 1979 to 1987. Johnson chose not to seek reelection as a Senator in 2014; South Dakota’s congressional delegation has been all-Republican since he left office. Johnson is also the last Democrat to have held statewide office in South Dakota or win a statewide election in the state.

The 2022 South Dakota Attorney General election took place on November 8, 2022, to elect the next attorney general of South Dakota. On June 21, 2022, former Republican Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg was convicted and removed from office for malfeasance of office. The State Senate further barred Ravnsborg from holding office in South Dakota. Republican Mark Vargo was appointed to fill the remainder of Ravnsborg's term and did not run for a full term.
