Roger de Pont L'Évêque was Archbishop of York from 1154 to 1181. Born in Normandy, he preceded Thomas Becket as Archdeacon of Canterbury, and together with Becket served Theobald of Bec while Theobald was Archbishop of Canterbury. While in Theobald's service, Roger was alleged to have committed a crime which Becket helped to cover up. Roger succeeded William FitzHerbert as archbishop in 1154, and while at York rebuilt York Minster, which had been damaged by fire.

Abraham Sowden was an English first-class cricketer, who played eight matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club from 1878 to 1887, and for T Emmett's XI in 1881, plus an England XI against the Australians in 1902, when he was aged 48.

Peter Tasker Sowden was an English professional footballer. His clubs included Aldershot, Accrington Stanley, Wrexham and Gillingham, where he made over 130 Football League appearances.

James Robert Blair was an Australian-born New Zealand cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and right-arm off-break bowler who played for Otago. He was born in Tasmania and died in Karitane.
