Brigadier Rohitha Neil Akmeemana RSP, USP was a senior Sri Lanka Army officer who served as Brigade Commander, 54-2 Brigade which was attached to the 54 Division during the Second Battle of Elephant Pass in April 2000. [1]
Having joined the Sri Lanka Army as an officer cadet in 1976, he received his training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion, Gemunu Watch. [2] There he was a part of the regimental Cricket team which won the Army inter regimental Cricket tournament in 1979. [2] During his military career spanning over 22 years, he held a number of battle commands in the 30-year-old ethnic conflict battling the LTTE. He was appointed as the first commanding officer of the 9th Battalion, Gemunu Watch on 24 January 1994 and commanded the unit in the eastern theater of war until 1995. [3] In 1995 he was appointed as the centre commandant at the Gemunu Watch regimental headquarters in Kuruwita. [3]
He was killed in action during the Second Battle of Elephant Pass during the SLA's strategic withdrawal following a massive LTTE offensive in April 2000. [4] [5] During the withdrawal his brigade acted as a rear guard alongside the Independent Special Forces brigade commanded by Major General Percy Fernando. After the withdrawal he died of dehydration on 22 April at the Palali hospital. [1] He was serving in the rank of Colonel as a Brigade commander and was posthumously promoted to the rank of Brigadier. [2]
He was awarded the Rana Sura Padakkama and Uttama Seva Padakkama among other medals for gallantry and service. [3]
Lieutenant General Denzil Lakshman Kobbekaduwa, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, rcds, psc, SLAC was a Sri Lankan General. He led some of the most successful military operations in the early part of the Sri Lankan Civil War, such as Vadamarachchi Operation and Operation Balavegaya. He was mortally wounded and his commanders and staff killed when the Land Rover they were travelling in hit a land mine in the island of Kayts while making preparations for Operation Final Countdown the proposed invasion of the Jaffna Peninsula.
Major General Vanigamuni Indrajith Vijeyakumar Mendis Wimalaratne, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, psc, GR was a Sri Lankan general. One of the most distinguished field commanders in Sri Lanka, Wimalaratne raised the Gajaba Regiment, he commanded the 1st Brigade during the Vadamarachchi Operation, he commanded the Amphibious Task Force Commander during Operation Balavegaya and was the Commander Security Forces – Jaffna at the time of his death in a land mine explosion at Point Arali in the Kayts Island while making preparations to re-capture Jaffna.
Lieutenant General Parami Sugandika Bandara Kulatunga, RSP, VSV, USP, GW was a Sri Lankan general. He was serving as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and its third highest-ranking officer. at the time of his assassination.
The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) is the oldest and largest of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces. Established as the Ceylon Army in 1949, it was renamed when Sri Lanka became a republic in 1972. In 2010, the Army had approximately 200,000 regular personnel, between 20,000–40,000 reserve personnel and 18,000 National Guardsmen and comprises 13 operational divisions, one air-mobile brigade, one commando brigade, one special forces brigade, one independent armored brigade, three mechanized infantry brigades and over 40 infantry brigades. From the 1980s to 2009 the army was engaged in the Sri Lankan Civil War.

It is named after one of the most famous Lankan Kings, King Dutugemunu.
The Battle of Mullaitivu, also known as the First Battle of Mullaitivu and codenamed Operation Unceasing Waves, was a battle between the militant Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the Sri Lankan military during the Sri Lankan Civil War for control of the military base in Mullaitivu in north-eastern Sri Lanka.
Major General Janaka Perera, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, VSP, rcds, psc, CR was a Sri Lankan General and politician. He served as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and is considered one of the most distinguished generals in Sri Lankan history. After retiring from the army he served as a Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Australia and Ambassador to Indonesia. He was the opposition leader of the North Central Provincial Council until he and his wife were killed on 6 October 2008 by a suicide bomber. The LTTE have been blamed for the bombing by Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Operation Balavegaya was a combined military operation launched by the Sri Lankan military in Jaffna, the largest amphibious assault in its history. Operation Balavegaya was launched in response to the siege of Elephant Pass by the LTTE. It is believed that Operation Balavegaya was the largest and most successful military operation of the Sri Lankan military until Operation Riviresa in 1995.

He is the Acting Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Sri Lankan Army, His prior appointments include, Chief of Staff of the army, Adjutant General and Director of Operations of the Army. During the Sri Lankan civil war he gained fame as the General Officer Commanding of the elite 58 Division. He has also served as Sri Lankan Ambassador and the Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Headquarters.
General Shantha Kottegoda, WWV, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP is a Sri Lankan general. He was the seventeenth Commander of the Sri Lankan Army from 1 July 2004 – 5 December 2007. He had served as the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Brazil and Thailand. In April 2019, following the Easter Sunday bombings he was appointed as the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Defence.
