The Roman Catholic Diocese of Enugu (Latin : Enuguen(sis)) is a diocese located in the city of Enugu in the Ecclesiastical province of Onitsha in Nigeria.

History

On November 12, 1962, the Diocese of Enugu was erected from ecclesiastical territory gained from the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Onitsha. [1] On July 8, 2005, Enugu lost territory to the new Diocese of Awgu. [2]

Its first bishop is John Ifeanyichukwu Okoye. The St. Michael Archangel Parish Church in Awgu is the largest church in the diocese and will therefore become its cathedral.

Godfrey Okoye University was founded in 2009 by the Very Reverend Father Professor Dr. Christian Anieke for the Catholic Diocese of Enugu. The university, which got its operational licence on 3 November 2009 from the National Universities Commission (NUC), belongs to the Catholic Diocese of Enugu in Nigeria. It is the first university owned by a Catholic Diocese in Africa.

Godfrey Mary Paul Okoye, C.S.Sp. was a bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in Nigeria. He was the first Bishop of Port Harcourt, serving from 3 September 1961 to 7 March 1970. After leaving the diocese of Port Harcourt, he became the second Bishop of Enugu, succeeding Bishop John Cross Anyogu.

Valerian Maduka Okeke is a Nigerian prelate who serves as the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha, and Metropolitan of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province. He was born in Umudioka, Anambra State and ordained to the priesthood on 11 July 1981 by cardinal Francis Arinze, who was then the Archbishop of Onitsha. After his ordination, he worked as a parish vicar at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Onitsha, under Emmanuel Otteh. Valerian Okeke later served as parish priest of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows' Parish, Umuoji.
