Romas Zabarauskas (born 31 May 1990) [1] is a Lithuanian film director, screenwriter, author [2] and producer. [3] He established film company Naratyvas in 2012. [4] Zabarauskas, a member of the European Film Academy, completed film studies at the Paris 8 Vincennes Saint-Denis University with an exchange year at CUNY/Hunter. [5] He had previously attended the Jonas Basanavičius school in Vilnius. [6]

Zabarauskas made his debut with a short film Porno melodrama in 2011 which was shown at the international film festival Berlinale.

Openly gay, [7] Romas takes part in social actions against homophobia. He developed the LGBT Friendly Vilnius initiative, [8] " a map of LGBTQ friendly cafes in Vilnius, which aims to promote openness to all sexualities, races, disabilities, and nationalities within the city.

Zabarauskas openly campaigns for LGBTQ+ rights. He published an open letter to the Lithuanian president regarding the country's partnership law. [12] He, among other Lithuanians, gathered at the Seimas to campaign for the Partnership Law to be passed, at which he was a speaker. [13] He also champions other causes, such as supporting refugees within Lithuania, namely in partnership with donation platform Aukok.It, in collaboration with the Lithuanian Red Cross, and as a member of the Become an Ambassador project. [14]

Lithuanian book smugglers or Lithuanian book carriers smuggled Lithuanian language books printed in the Latin alphabet into Lithuanian-speaking areas of the Russian Empire, defying a ban on such materials in force from 1864 to 1904. In Lithuanian knygnešys literally means "the one who carries books". Opposing imperial Russian authorities' efforts to replace the traditional Latin orthography with Cyrillic, and transporting printed matter from as far away as the United States to do so, the book smugglers became a symbol of Lithuanians' resistance to Russification.

The January Events were a series of violent confrontations between the civilian population of Lithuania, supporting independence, and the Soviet Armed Forces. The events took place between 11 and 13 January 1991, after the restoration of independence by Lithuania. As a result of the Soviet military actions, 14 civilians were killed and over 140 were injured. 13 January, sometimes referred to as Bloody Sunday, was the most violent day. The events were primarily centered in the capital city Vilnius, but Soviet military activity and confrontations occurred elsewhere in the country, including Alytus, Šiauliai, Varėna and Kaunas.

Owl Mountain is a 2017 Lithuanian historical drama feature film directed by Audrius Juzėnas. The film portrays political and historical events between 1947-1953 in Lithuania, when the Lithuanian population conducted guerrilla warfare against the Soviet authorities that occupied the country in an attempt to gain independence. The Soviet authorities reacted to the Lithuanian partisans by arresting and deporting several to Siberia, whilst killing others.
