Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania, with a population of 581,475 as of 2023. The population of Vilnius's functional urban area, which stretches beyond the city limits, is estimated at 718,507, while according to the Vilnius territorial health insurance fund, there were 753,875 permanent inhabitants as of November 2022 in Vilnius city and Vilnius district municipalities combined. Vilnius is situated in southeastern Lithuania and is currently the second largest city in the Baltic states. It is the seat of Lithuania's national government and the Vilnius District Municipality.
Lithuanian book smugglers or Lithuanian book carriers smuggled Lithuanian language books printed in the Latin alphabet into Lithuanian-speaking areas of the Russian Empire, defying a ban on such materials in force from 1864 to 1904. In Lithuanian knygnešys literally means "the one who carries books". Opposing imperial Russian authorities' efforts to replace the traditional Latin orthography with Cyrillic, and transporting printed matter from as far away as the United States to do so, the book smugglers became a symbol of Lithuanians' resistance to Russification.
The January Events were a series of violent confrontations between the civilian population of Lithuania, supporting independence, and the Soviet Armed Forces. The events took place between 11 and 13 January 1991, after the restoration of independence by Lithuania. As a result of the Soviet military actions, 14 civilians were killed and over 140 were injured. 13 January, sometimes referred to as Bloody Sunday, was the most violent day. The events were primarily centered in the capital city Vilnius, but Soviet military activity and confrontations occurred elsewhere in the country, including Alytus, Šiauliai, Varėna and Kaunas.

Skvernelis Cabinet teachers pay reform led to the biggest teachers strike in Lithuania's history. His Government had also introduced measures that reduced freedom of press. Skvernelis is considered of being pragmatic politician who doesn't have a clear political ideology.

Owl Mountain is a 2017 Lithuanian historical drama feature film directed by Audrius Juzėnas. The film portrays political and historical events between 1947-1953 in Lithuania, when the Lithuanian population conducted guerrilla warfare against the Soviet authorities that occupied the country in an attempt to gain independence. The Soviet authorities reacted to the Lithuanian partisans by arresting and deporting several to Siberia, whilst killing others.
