Ron Thaler is a record producer, touring and session drummer, and 360 immersive sound entrepreneur.

Thaler is active in music licensing and publishing through his firms RTP Music Ltd. (Canada) and Soda Box Music (New York City and Florence). [1] [2] He is the CEO of Soundsphere Studios, a spatial sound studio. [3]

Biography

Early Years

Thaler was 11 years old when he first picked up drumsticks, after playing piano for three years. [4] He joined his high school jazz-band and played his first professional shows at age 16 with jazz saxophonist Gordon Clements and with the Island Big Band. [5] In his late teens, Thaler moved to Vancouver, Canada, [6] and toured with electronica band Moev in support of their release Yeah Whatever (Nettwerk Records). Thaler performed with trumpeter Mark Hasselbach (Smooth), and trombonist Ian McDougall (Concord). [6]

In 1993, Thaler began recording at Envy Music House and Ludlow Productions on music jingles for the Cartoon Network, Coca-Cola, McDonald's and ESPN, and performed in Latin-jazz group Conosur along with Manolo Badrena and Al Di Meola, and with soukous artist Dominic Kanza. [7] In 1994 Thaler recorded the East Coast sessions for Arista Records artist Jonathan Robbins' album "You Got Me", tracking drums on the West Coast sessions. Thaler recorded drumset and percussion on the title track. [8]

As a live, touring, and studio drummer, Thaler has worked with Dweezil Zappa, DJ Logic, Bethany Joy Lenz, Taylor Dayne, Moby & Gwen Stefani (The Counts), John Legend, David Guetta, Sophie B. Hawkins, Jonathan Robbins, Alicia Keys, Ashlee Simpson, Mercedes Ferrer, Lizzy Mercer Descloux, Judie Tzuke, Yoko Ono, Simaku, Willie Nelson & Hank Williams Jr., Mike Stern, Rufus Reid, and Hiram Bullock. In 2008 Thaler was featured with the Project Grand Slam band on NBC TV's Lipstick Jungle. [12] In 2011, Thaler toured the US and Europe with Anita Prime.

Thaler’s production and drumming work is credited on Kelly Saint Patrick's "In The Margins", Project Grand Slam's "Play", Jason Yudoff's "Tragic Hero", and on Alicia Keys "No One" (from As I Am, 2008 Double Grammy winner, #1 Billboard) [11] . Thaler has also produced The Led Zep Project (featuring Dweezil Zappa) “Jazzed & Confused”, Eric Hill's “Second Sight”, Elimotion's “Elimotion 1”, The True Story Band's "Grain", Jeff Fiorello's “Jeff Fiorello”, Nika Brightn's “Television”, and Amelia Terry's "Road Less Travelled". In 2010, Thaler produced Anita Prime’s “Destiny”, Lewis Copeland “Roots”, Oh Hello's “One Trick Pony”, and Heavy Road's “Everything Changed”.

In 2011 and 2012, Thaler produced and co-wrote Anita Prime's single “Complicated” reaching #3 on Dance/Club Play New Artist Billboard charts 's Dance Club chart in November 2011. [13] , The Royal Canadians “Lonely Whale”, Mahavishnu Redefined's “Timeless”, Isunray's “Balancing Act”, Gareth Barker's “Hello World”, and Project Grand Slam's “Spring Dance”. [9]

In 2013 and 2014, Thaler produced Traum Diggs “Major Journalism”, Martin Rybak's “Live For The Day”, and Darren Hodson & Southern Companion's “1000 Days Of Rain” (2x BCMA winner). [9]

In 2015 & 2016, Thaler produced Secondhand Habit's "Chinese Whispers", Mark Edwards "Hallelujah Chorus 2.0", Dorothy Melody's "Walk On Water", Nate Jolley's "Love Apocalypto", The Run Dogs "The Run Dogs" as well as Morrisey's "How Soon Is Now" with the band for NBC, and contributed vocal production to Joey Clarkson's single "Loving You Is Breaking Me". [14]

In 2017 and 2018, Thaler produced Yola Rage's "Sugar", Andy Pratt's "It's Not The End Of The World", Kelly Saint Patrick's "Recover", Amy Jack's "Don't Lose Your Soul Over It", tracks for Shy'm and Wyclef Jean with partner Louis Cote, and tracks for Capcom's game platform "Dead Rising: 4".

In 2019 and 2020, Thaler produced PuKa's “Rabbit Hole”, Amy Jack's "Who The Real Ones Are” and “Dallas Till i Die”, Perrenque Films "La Voz Magica De Edith". 12XPretty's "12XPretty”, and Isa Ruiz's "Luna”. [15]

In 2021 and 2022, Thaler produced 6ixNK’s “The Ten Year Itch”, Laura Cortes McAllister’s “Insane”, G*Man’s “Saucers Over Tokyo”, and Danielle Thaler's "The Lady Of Brody".

Solo projects

In 1994 Thaler began performing under his own name, showcasing his original compositions, and he recorded ...Works (TP Records/OMD) with jazz musicians Ray Anderson, Hiram Bullock, Rick Margitza, Rufus Reid, Adam Rogers, and Oskar Cartaya. The group performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Vancouver Jazz Fest, the Zebrock Festival, and other venues in Canada and France. [16]

In 1997 Thaler formed "The True Story Band", with jazz musicians Mike Stern, Chris Clark, Ron Bertolet and Jeff Carney. Thaler toured "The True Story Band" through Europe, Canada and the US in support of the group's two releases, 1997's Medium Rare Grounds (TP/Factor) and 1998's Grain (EFA/JVC).

In 2000 Thaler took to reworking the music of Led Zeppelin for an instrumental context. Thaler recorded Jazzed & Confused: The Led Zep Project (TP) in 2001. The album includes Led Zeppelin compositions "Kashmir", "Whole Lotta Love", "The Rain Song", "The Ocean", and "Dazed & Confused", and 25 musicians including guitarists Mike Stern and Dweezil Zappa, violinist Miri Ben Ari, turntablist DJ Logic, harmonica player Hendrik Meurkens, trombonist Dave Panichi, trumpeter Vinny Cutro, and flamenco vocalist and dancers Amparo and Racquel Heredia. The album was produced by Thaler and Goo Goo Dolls/Maroon 5 alumnus Michael Landolt. [17]

In 2008, Thaler formed the experimental music group Elimotion, with bassist Matt Garrison, turntablist DJ Logic and guitarist Elijah Steele. The group's first release, Elimotion 1, was recorded at Manhattan Center Studios NYC, and released in 2014. [18]

Soundsphere and Lysten360

Thaler is the president of SoundSphere® [19] , a spatial sound recording and immersive sound technology company, and Lysten360® [20] , an XR hardware and services technology company.  Thaler, and partners 4D Sound and Boardroom Audio, have branded hardware, software codecs, and music platforms for AR/VR/MR/XR and 360 immersive sound transmission in physical and online platforms. Thaler has delivered many drumming clinics, seminars and educational workshops internationally. He has performed at the 1996 Montreal DrumFest [23] , the 2003 TUDW Ultimate Drummers Weekend International Drum Festival (Australia), [17] the 2004 KOSA Drum Festival (solo performance and trio performance with drummers Johnny Rabb and Steve Smith), [17] the 2006 Fort Myers Drum Festival, [6] the inaugural 2010 Victoria Drum Fest, [5] the 2010 National Association of Music Manufacturers (NAMM) International Music Fair, [6] the MIDEM Music Conference in Cannes France, [18] the 2011 CMW Music Conference in Toronto Canada, [18] the 1998 Music West International Music Conference in Vancouver, [24] the 2004 Paris Zebrock Music Festival, [7] at Drummer's Collective New York City, [18] Music Academy International (France), [25] University of Victoria, [7] University of British Columbia, [24] Music Arts Academy (Geneva, Switzerland), [7] SAE College (Auckland New Zealand, Barcelona Spain), [18] Prime Music Academy (Wellington, New Zealand), [18] and others. Thaler has been featured on Drumeo TV, [26] and on four segments for the Daddario/Evans Educational Webcast Series. [8]

In 1998, Thaler released an instructional drumming video called Phraseology And Individuality On The Drumset. [27] The video was voted one of the "Top 25 Must-Have Instructional Drumming Videos of All Time" by readers of France's Batteur Magazine in 2007. [25]

Joe's Garage is a three-part rock opera released by American musician Frank Zappa in September and November 1979. Originally released as two separate albums on Zappa Records, the project was later remastered and reissued as a triple album box set, Joe's Garage, Acts I, II & III, in 1987. The story is told by a character identified as the "Central Scrutinizer" narrating the story of Joe, an average adolescent male, from Canoga Park, Los Angeles, who forms a garage rock band, has unsatisfying relationships with women, gives all of his money to a government-assisted and insincere religion, explores sexual activities with appliances, and is imprisoned. After being released from prison into a dystopian society in which music itself has been criminalized, he lapses into insanity.

Terry John Bozzio is an American drummer best known for his work with Missing Persons and Frank Zappa. He has been featured on nine solo or collaborative albums, 26 albums with Zappa and seven albums with Missing Persons. Bozzio has been a prolific sideman, playing on numerous releases by other artists since the mid-1970s. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1997.

Warren Bruce Cuccurullo is an American musician, songwriter, restaurant owner and former bodybuilder who first worked with Frank Zappa during the 1970s. He was also a founding member of Missing Persons in the 1980s. In 1986 Cuccurullo joined Duran Duran, becoming a long-term member of the band until 2001. In 2022, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Duran Duran.

<i>Civilization Phaze III</i> 1994 studio album by Frank Zappa

Civilization Phaze III is the sixty-third album by Frank Zappa, released posthumously as a double album on October 31, 1994. It was the first studio album of new material from Zappa since 1986's Jazz from Hell. The album marks the third part of a conceptual continuity that started with We're Only in It for the Money (1968), with the second part being a re-edited version of Zappa's 1967 album Lumpy Gravy. Zappa described the album as a "two-act opera", but in lieu of traditional recitatives and arias, it alternates brief spoken word passages with musical numbers created on a Synclavier using a combination of sampled and synthesized sounds. Much of the sampled material in the second half of the album was originally recorded by Ensemble Modern and other musicians to Zappa's specifications.

Modern Drummer is a monthly publication targeting the interests of drummers and percussionists. The magazine features interviews, equipment reviews, and columns offering advice on technique, as well as information for the general public. Modern Drummer is also available on the internet.

<i>Hot Rats</i> American rock album

Hot Rats is the second solo album by Frank Zappa, released in October 1969. It was Zappa's first recording project after the dissolution of the original version of the Mothers of Invention. Five of the six songs are instrumental; while "Willie the Pimp", features vocals by Captain Beefheart. In his original sleeve notes, Zappa described the album as "a movie for your ears".

Zappa's Universe is a 1993 Frank Zappa tribute album featuring alumni from many of Zappa's bands. The music was compiled from a series of concerts from four consecutive nights of concerts at The Ritz in New York City, and filmed for a concert video of the same name. Steve Vai’s cover of the song "Sofa" from the album won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1994.
