Ross Cullum (born 1957 in Fulham, London, England) is an English composer, record producer, and audio engineer, known for working with Enya, Tears for Fears, Moya Brennan, and several other artists.

Career

Cullum became an assistant at George Martin's AIR Studios, where he worked on recordings by Roxy Music and others. [1]

In the 1980s, after touring the world mixing live shows, he formed a production collaboration with Chris Hughes. Together they worked with Adam and the Ants, Wang Chung, Ric Ocasek and others. [1] The duo worked together with Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears on The Hurting . In an interview with Wyndham Wallace, Orzabal recalled discussions like "a two-against-two battle throughout the album", with Wallace writing that "it all proved worthwhile." [2] Hughes and Cullum used high-tech production techniques on the Paul McCartney song "Motor of Love", according to Mike Evans, giving it a synth sound, with a "lush backing of electronic effects". [3]

He worked with Enya and Nicky Ryan on the album Watermark . James E. Perone notes that Enya's vocals are bathed in reverb leading to a "hazy and impressionistic" sound. [4] Cullum is mentioned by his first name in the lyrics of "Orinoco Flow". [5]

The Moya Brennan Grammy-nominated album Two Horizons , which Cullum produced and co-composed, was described by Greg Quill as "an ethereal and juiced-up orchestral concept album" [6]

Other artists he has worked with include Tori Amos, Miguel Bosé, Howard Jones, the Human League, the Afro Celt Sound System, Chris Hughes ( Shift - a tribute to Steve Reich), Robert Plant, Perry Blake, Mary-Jess Leaverland, Jana Kirschner, Rufus Wainwright, Zucchero, and Phildel. [1]

Watermark is the second studio album by Irish singer, songwriter and musician Enya, released on 19 September 1988 by WEA. After the release of her previous album Enya (1987), she secured a recording contract with Warner following a chance meeting with chairman Rob Dickins, who had become a fan of her music. Her contract allowed her considerable artistic and creative freedom, with minimal interference from the label and no deadlines. Enya recorded Watermark in ten months with her long-time collaborators: manager, producer and arranger Nicky Ryan and his wife, lyricist Roma Ryan. It was initially recorded in Ireland in demo form before production relocated to London to re-record, mix, and master it digitally. This Side of Paradise is the second solo studio album released by Ric Ocasek, lead singer and songwriter of the Cars. It was released in 1986 by Geffen Records. Though it was a solo album, other members of the Cars played significant roles. Greg Hawkes plays keyboards and bass throughout the album, and also co-wrote "Hello Darkness". Benjamin Orr is on backing vocals for three songs. Along with Hawkes and Orr, the track "True To You" also features Elliot Easton on guitar. Both production and drumming were by Chris Hughes. Hughes had been the recent producer of Tears for Fears most popular two albums. Steve Stevens from Billy Idol's band plays guitar on over half of the album.

Christopher Merrick Hughes, also known as Merrick, is a British music producer, songwriter, and former drummer of Adam and the Ants. Best known as producer of Tears for Fears' Songs from the Big Chair, and as the co-writer of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", Hughes has a joint background as a musician, songwriter and producer. His career began with Adam and the Ants as drummer and producer of the "Cartrouble" and "Kings of the Wild Frontier" singles, then the Kings of the Wild Frontier album. Yielding three hit singles, the album earned Hughes Music Week's 'Producer of the Year Award'.
