RotFront (often prefixed with: "Emigrantski Raggamuffin Kollektiv") is a world music band from Berlin.

History

The group was founded in 2003 as Emigrantski Raggamuffin Kollektiv RotFront by Ukrainian Yuriy Gurzhy together with Wladimir Kaminer and Hungarian Simon Wahorn.

Other artists occasionally performed with RotFront. The number of musicians on stage sometimes reached fifteen. Actress and singer Dorka Gryllus is a former band member.

The German World Music Award Ruth was awarded in 2010 to RotFront for their performance at folk music festival TFF Rudolstadt. [1]

The band plays in various styles including rock, hip-hop, Dance Hall, reggae, ska and a variety of folk backgrounds.

Song lyrics are written in multiple languages, such as German, English, Russian, Ukrainian and Hungarian.

Inspired lyrically by the traditional Cossack folk song "Koloda-Duda", Pete Seeger borrowed an Irish melody and the first three verses in 1955 and published it in Sing Out! magazine. Additional verses were added in May 1960 by Joe Hickerson, who turned it into a circular song. Its rhetorical "where?" and meditation on death place the song in the ubi sunt tradition. In 2010, the New Statesman listed it as one of the "Top 20 Political Songs".

Holy Blood is a folk metal band from Kyiv, Ukraine, formed in 1999. The band is notable for being one of the few Christian bands in its genre, and the fact that they are the most successful group on its label Bombworks Records, and the band has been noted worldwide despite being an underground group. Holy Blood has released six albums: The Wanderer, Waves Are Dancing, The Patriot, Shining Sun, Day of Vengeance and Voice of Blood.

Galloping Coroners was a Hungarian rock band active from 1975–2001, and briefly reformed in 2009 and 2013. The band established a unique "shaman punk" or "psychedelic hardcore” sound, and is regarded as one of the most important alternative bands of the 1980s from the Eastern European block. Permanent restrictions by Hungarian authorities made worldwide tours difficult for the band, but its ecstatic concerts garnered surprising success across Western Europe. Though relatively obscure and commercially limited outside of Eastern Europe, Maximumrocknroll described the band as "equal in spirit and grit to faves like Sonic Youth or Big Black but with an identity all its own”. Ruslana Stepanivna Lyzhychko, known mononymously as Ruslana, is a World Music Award and Eurovision Song Contest winning recording artist, holding the title of People's Artist of Ukraine. She is also a former MP serving as deputy in the Ukrainian parliament for the Our Ukraine Party. Ruslana was the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in Ukraine in 2004-2005. She is recognized as the most successful Ukrainian female solo artist internationally and was included in the top 10 most influential women of 2013 by the Forbes magazine. The U.S. Secretary of State honored her with the International Women of Courage Award in March, 2014. She has been named an honorary citizen of her hometown Lviv and was nominated to receive the title Hero of Ukraine.
