Begum Rowshan Ershad (born 19 July 1943) [3] is a Jatiya Party politician from Bangladesh. She was the former Jatiya Sangsad member from the Mymensingh-4 constituency and the former leader of the opposition in the 11th parliament. [4] [5] [6] She is the chief patron of the Jatiya Party (Ershad) [7] and the widow of former Bangladesh president Hussain Muhammad Ershad. [8]

Political career

As the first lady during 1982–1990, Ershad was active in social welfare and in promoting the rights of women and children. She was the chief patron of the Bangladesh Jatiya Mohila Sangstha. [9]

In 1975, Ershad became the founder-president of the Sena Paribar Kalyan Samity (Armed Forces Family Welfare Association). She attended the UN Special Convention on Drug Abuse in 1985. [9]

In November 2023, Ershad announced she would not participate at the 2024 Bangladeshi general election. [10]

Personal life

Rowshan married Hussain Muhammad Ershad in 1956. [11] Together they had a son, Saad Ershad, and a daughter, Jebin. [11]

On 3 January 2019, the party announced its decision to join the Bangladesh Awami League-led Grand Alliance after having been in opposition for the previous parliamentary term. However, the party backtracked the next day and announced that it intended to remain part of the opposition.

General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was another landslide victory for the Awami League-led Grand Alliance led by Sheikh Hasina. The elections were marred by violence, and were widely considered by opposition politicians and the international community to be rigged.

Chittagong massacre refers to a massacre of opposition activists in Chittagong on January 24 of 1988. The activists of Awami League who were rallying in the streets of Chittagong that day were attacked by the police during the regime of autocratic ruler Hussain Muhammad Ershad. The then Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mirza Rakibul Huda ordered the police to open fire on the rally that left at least 24 people dead.

The 1990 Mass Uprising, popularly known as '90's Anti-Authoritarian Movement, was a democratic movement that took place on 4 December and led to the fall of General Hussain Muhammad Ershad in Bangladesh. The uprising was the result of a series of popular protests that started from 10 October 1990 to topple General Ershad who came to power in 1982 by imposing martial law and replaced a democratically elected President through a bloodless coup.

Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu was a Bangladeshi politician of the Jatiya Party and served as the Secretary General for two terms. He was a Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Chittagong-9 constituency at the 10th Jatiya Sangsad and the Chittagong-6 constituency at the 4th Jatiya Sangsad. He served as the Cabinet Minister for Energy during Ershad's regime in the 1980s. He was appointed an advisor to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in November 2013.

Sayed Abu Hossain (babla) (born 12 October 1956) is a Jatiya Party (Ershad) politician and former Member of Parliament from Dhaka-4.

Anwara Begum was a Bangladeshi politician who was elected as member of 3rd Jatiya Sangsad of reserved seats for women. She joined Jatiya Party from Jatiya Party of Hussain Muhammad Ershad in 2013. She was appointed a presidium member of Jatiya Party. She died on 4 August 2019 at the age of 70.

Rahgir Almahe Ershad, better known as Saad Ershad, is a Bangladeshi businessman and politician belonging to Jatiya Party. He is the former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Rangpur-3 constituency. His father Hussain Muhammad Ershad was a former president of Bangladesh and his mother Rowshan Ershad is the current leader of the opposition of the Jatiya Sangsad. On 29 October 2019, he was appointed the joint secretary general of the Jatiya Party.

In 2023, by-elections are scheduled to be held for vacant seats in the Jatiya Sangsad, the legislative body of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. In the Jatiya Sangsad, MPs for 300 seats are elected directly and MPs for 50 reserved women seats are elected indirectly by the MPs, thus popular by-elections are only held in the direct seats. As the 11th parliament is scheduled to be expire on 29 January 2024 and the Election Commission has announced to hold the next Bangladeshi general election between late December 2023 to early January 2024, all candidates elected by these by-polls will be members of the 11th Jatiya Sangsad.

Golam Moshi is a Jatiya Party politician, and the former ambassador of Bangladesh to Saudi Arabia. He is the political secretary of Rowshan Ershad, the Leader of the Opposition in Bangladesh Parliament.
