Royal Southampton Yacht Club is located on the Beaulieu River in Hampshire. It received its Royal Charter in 1875 making it one of the oldest Yacht clubs in the UK.
At the first regatta of the 1840 season, the club announced, "...that her Majesty has been graciously pleased to consent to the Club being called "The Royal Southampton Yacht Club." [1]
The Office of the Lord High Admiral warranted the club to use the distinguishing flag consisting of "a white ensign, with the crown and Southampton arms in the centre" in parliamentary papers from 1859. [2] In the previous year, the Admiralty had withdrawn permission to fly the White Ensign from any yacht club except for the Royal Yacht Squadron. [2]
The West Quay Regatta Club was formally established in 1866 but had existed for many years before that date, and was known as the "father" of the Royal Southampton Yacht Club. [3]
When the cornerstone of a new clubhouse was laid in 1885, the estimated cost of the planned building with land included, was about £8,000, occupying an area of about 8000 square feet, three stories high, with a basement and a tower. [4]

The design is "domestic gothic", and the premises will be of local red bricks, pointed with black mortar, the dressings being executed in red terra-cotta The building will contain a large room for the club meeting, smoking, library, chess, billiard, dining, and other rooms, while every attention has been paid to the ventilation, sanitation, and the comfort and convenience of the members. The architect is Mr W. H. Mitchell, of Southampton ; the contractors Messrs J. Crook and Sons, of the same town, and the building, which already shows above the hoarding, is to bo ready for occupation before the end of the present year. [4]
In 1886, members celebrated the opening of the new facility, "new and extensive premises erected for the members of the club, on a portion of the land Above Bar, known as the Ogle site, in the place formerly occupied by the Circus, which building, by no means an ornament to the locality, has now given way to the large and handsome structure in future to be the headquarters of the successful Yacht Club, which had its origin in Southampton, where so many of the most superior of the British Yachting fleet have been built." According to the Daily Telegraph, in 1897 "The Queen's Cup is first presented to the Royal Southampton Yacht Club by Queen Victoria. It was won by Latana and is still awarded today to the IRC Class Zero winner of the first Saturday's racing." [6]
As of 1898 the club had over 200 members and organised the annual Southampton Regatta. [3] The annual membership subscription fee at the time was 10 shillings and sixpence. [3]
More recently, Ocean Village in Southampton included "a building for the Royal Southampton Yacht Club Houses built in the early 1990s". [7]

The Royal Norwegian Yacht Club is a yacht club in Oslo, Norway. The club was founded in 1883 as country-wide organisation with affiliated local yacht clubs. In 1884, it was granted the right for members to fly the naval Ensign of Norway with the Royal cypher on a centrally placed white field. In 1970, it was reorganized as local club for the Oslo area, under a new nationwide federation of yacht clubs. To date, the club has some 4,000 members.
The Royal Gibraltar Yacht Club, formerly the Gibraltar Yacht Club, was established by officers of the Royal Navy in 1829. It was one of the first yacht clubs founded outside of Britain. British monarchs and Gibraltarian governors have been patrons of the club; the first visit by a reigning monarch was in 1954. During the latter twentieth century, the naval presence waned and the membership of locals dominated. The club's sailing school was established in 2001, accredited as a teaching facility in 2004, and became a testing centre in 2010. The reclamation projects in the middle section of Gibraltar Harbour necessitated the club's move from 26 Queensway to temporary premises. A new facility is under construction.

The Enchantress was a 19th-century racing yacht, winner of several national and international Cups including the Royal Yacht Squadron's 53-mile (85 km) regatta around the Le Havre to Southampton, and the New York Yacht Club's 140-mile (230 km) regatta from Owl's Head Point to Sandy Hook Lightship. She was designed by Robert Fish for George L. Lorillard.
The Royal Victoria Yacht Club was founded at Ryde, on the Isle of Wight and uniquely granted 'Royal' status immediately. In 1845 the club was granted a warrant to wear the Red Ensign of HM Fleet. From 1872 until 1898 the club held the warrant to wear the crown defaced Red Ensign. It currently holds the warrant for its defaced ensign. It is the second club of that name, succeeding a failed club on the Thames and preceding its namesake in Canada by nearly fifty years. It was once regarded as one of the premier yacht racing clubs of the world. In 1961, after two world wars and the decline in yacht racing as the preserve of the wealthy, the Royal Victoria amalgamated with two local dinghy sailing clubs and moved its base to Fishbourne on Wootton Creek, some five miles (8.0 km) west of Ryde where it remains.
The New York Yacht Club Building is a seven-story Beaux-Arts clubhouse at 37 West 44th Street in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. Opened in 1901, the building was designed by architect Whitney Warren of Warren and Wetmore as the sixth clubhouse of the New York Yacht Club (NYYC). The clubhouse is part of Clubhouse Row, a concentration of clubhouses on 44th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The building is a New York City designated landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark.
