Russell Wolf Brown (born March 6, 1985) is a former American professional athlete who competed in the 1 mile and 1500 meter events.
Raised in Hanover, New Hampshire, Brown began running track events at age ten. [1] He attended Hanover High School where he initially played lacrosse, soccer, and ice hockey. He won the 800 m at Hershey's National Final in 1999 and both the 3200 m relay and 800 m at USATF Junior Olympics in 2001. He anchored the 3200m Relay to wins at the USATF Junior Olympics in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Russell's 800 m split in the 2003 race was 1:49. [2] In his sophomore year he was recruited by the cross country team. He began to focus exclusively on running after being impressed with the mature attitudes toward competition that he saw on the track team. [1] In his junior year he was the New Hampshire individual class intermediate cross country state champion. The next year he won the New England 600 meter indoor title and finished third at the 2003 U.S. Junior National Championships. [3] He also set the New Hampshire state high school record for the 800 meter race, which still stands to this day at 1:50.85. [3] In the spring of his senior year, during the state championship meet against all other Class I schools in New Hampshire, Brown won the 400-, 800-, 1600- and 3,200-meter events.
Brown entered Stanford University in 2003 as a redshirt freshman. [3] [4] A political science major at Stanford, Brown later earned a master's degree in Sociology. [1] Brown competed in the 2004 World Junior Championships in Athletics – Men's 1500 metres in 2004, finishing fifth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:49.02. [5]
He saw limited success in the 1,500 meter event in his first two years of competition with Stanford. He reached the 1,500 meter final at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2005 and in 2006 he finished second in the 1,500 meters at the 2006 Pacific-10 Championships. [3] He performed better indoors, placing third at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor mile event in 2005 before winning the event in 2006. [3] In 2007 Brown finished third in the 1,500 meter event at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships and won the 1,500 meter Pac–10 Championship. That year he also placed second in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships. [3]
In February 2008 Brown became a professional. He soon joined the Oregon Track Club. Brown represented the United States at the 2008 IAAF World Indoor Championships – Men's 1500 metres in Valencia, Spain where he finished seventh in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:47.19. [5] He competed in the 2008 U.S. Olympic trials, but did not qualify for the Olympics. He trained to qualify for the 2012 Olympics, however. [4]
The next season proved to be Brown's most successful as a professional. Before the season, he dealt with his injuries by taking extra time off and doing strengthening drills. [4] He won the one-mile event at the Falmouth Road Race August 2010, beating Olympic Silver medalist Nick Willis. [6] In February 2011 Brown finished first in the mile race at the New Balance Boston Indoor Grand Prix, defeating favorites Willis and Alan Webb in a personal best time of three minutes and fifty-four seconds. [7] He broke Steve Scott's stadium record at the Mt. SAC Relays in April, running 3:35.70 minutes for the 1500 m in 2011. [8]
Brown competed in the 2013 Maccabiah Games and won the silver medal in the 1500 m there. [9]
Russell Brown is married to former Stanford University women's volleyball player Nji Nnamani, the younger sister of Ogonna Nnamani. [10]
Bernard Kipchirchir Lagat is a Kenyan-American middle and long-distance runner.
Gabe Jennings is an American Olympian and semi-retired middle-distance runner. As a student at Madison East High School in Madison, Wisconsin, Jennings won nine state titles in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) and, as of 2022, still holds the 1600 meter record in the WIAA Division 1 with his 1997 time of 4:04.97. At Stanford University, he was an All-America athlete ten times and a NCAA champion four times. He qualified for the 2000 Summer Olympics as a college junior but was eliminated during the semi-finals.
Seneca Lassiter is an American former middle distance runner who specialized in the 1500 meters. As a high schooler running for Lafayette of Williamsburg, Virginia, he won National Scholastic indoor and outdoor championships for the mile and 800 meter run. In collegiate competition he ran for University of Arkansas, which was recognized for its prestigious track program which in Lassiter's time included recruits such as Sharif Karie. Lassiter ran professionally for Nike after his college spell.
Will Leer is an American mid-distance runner. He graduated from Pomona College in Claremont, California in May 2007. Leer has represented the United States in international competition.
Leonel "Leo" Manzano is a Mexican-American former middle-distance track and field athlete specializing in the 1500 m and mile. He was a silver medalist at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Manzano is known for finishing his races with a strong finishing kick.
Shannon Solares-Rowbury is an American middle-distance runner from San Francisco, California. After competing collegiately for Duke University, she turned professional in 2007. Rowbury has represented the United States at the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Summer Olympics. She also represented the United States at the World Championships in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017, winning the bronze medal in the 1500 meters in 2009. In 2015, Rowbury helped set the world record with the U.S. team for the distance medley relay event, and set a then-American record for 1500 meters on July 17, 2015, breaking Mary Slaney's 32 year-old mark with a time of 3:56.29.
Jennifer Simpson is an American middle- and long-distance runner, formerly a steeplechaser. She won the gold medal in the 1500 meters at the 2011 World Championships, silvers at the 2013 and 2017 World Championships, and a bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics, becoming the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in the event.
Matthew Centrowitz Jr. is an American middle-distance runner, who specializes in the 1500 metres. He won a gold medal in the event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He also achieved a bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships and a silver medal at the 2013 World Championships. Centrowitz is a five-time national champion in the 1500 m at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Morgan Uceny is a retired American track and field athlete who specialized in middle distance running. Uceny won three national championships and was the 2011 IAAF Diamond League Champion at 1500 meters. She ended 2011 as the first American since 1985 to be ranked number one in the world in the 1500 m by Track & Field News.
Emma Jane Coburn is an American middle-distance runner who specializes in the 3000-meters steeplechase. She holds the distinction of being a world champion, world silver medalist, Olympic bronze medalist, three-time Olympian and 10-time US National Champion in the steeplechase.
Mary Cecilia Cain is an American professional middle distance runner from Bronxville, New York. Cain was the 2014 World Junior Champion in the 3000 meter event. She is the youngest American athlete ever to represent the United States at a track and field World Championships meet after competing in the 2013 World Championships in Athletics in Moscow aged 17 years and 3 months.
Brenda Martinez is an American middle-distance runner and Olympian. Born in Upland, California, she won a silver medal in the 800 meters at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow and finished first in the 800 meters at the 2014 Diamond League Final. She represented the US at the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships in the 1500 meters. Martinez twice set the world record in the Distance Medley Relay at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston; first on February 7, 2015, and then breaking her own record on January 28, 2017. In 2016, Martinez qualified for the U.S. Olympic team competing in the 1500 meters after beating Amanda Eccleston by 0.03 seconds.
Garrett Heath is an American runner from Winona, Minnesota, who raced in various middle and long-distance running events. He represented the United States at the 2010 World Indoor Championships where he finished seventh in the 1500 meters. He is the elder brother of Elliott Heath.
Chanelle Price is an American middle-distance runner who specializes in the 800-meter run. She has a personal record of 1:58.73 for the distance. She was the gold medalist at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in 2014.
Alexa Efraimson is an American former professional middle distance runner from Camas, Washington who competed for Nike. Efraimson is training and in graduate school to become a Registered Dietitian in 2022-24. During the 2014 indoor and outdoor season, as a junior, she set a pair of U.S. high-school records, breaking Mary Cain's 2013 mark in the indoor 3,000 meters (9:02.10) with a time of 9:00.16 and running 4:33.29 in the 1,600 meters to shave 0.53 seconds from Christine Babcock's 4:33.82, set in 2008. Efraimson captured the bronze medal in the 1,500 meters at the 2013 World (U18) Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine.
Craig Engels is an American middle-distance runner. He competed for the United States at the 2013 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, where he won the men's 1500 meters. In the 2016 USA Olympic Trials Engels was focused on making the semi-finals of the 800m and was listed as an alternate for the 1500m. He finished 4th in the 800m final and 5th in the 1500m final, missing out on the Olympics in both events.
Cory Ann McGee is an American professional middle distance runner and Olympian from Pass Christian, Mississippi. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games she finished 12th in the 1500-meters. She was the 2011 Pan American U20 Champion and 2011 USA Juniors Outdoor Champion in the 1500-meters. In May 2022 she ran a personal best of 4:00.34 in the 1500-meters to move to 16th place on the US fastest all-time list.
Kate Grace is an American middle-distance runner. A multiple All-American runner for Yale University, she turned professional in 2011. Grace competed for the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympics, making it to the final of the 800 metres.
Shelby Houlihan is an American middle distance runner, Olympian and World Record holder in the 4x1500m relay who is currently serving a doping ban. Houlihan competed in the 5000m final at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, finishing 11th. She is a 12-time US National Champion winning seven indoor and five outdoor titles in middle-distance events. While at Arizona State University she won the 2014 NCAA 1500m championship.
Donavan Brazier is an American middle-distance runner. He holds the American junior record and American record in men's 800 meters and won the gold medal at the 2019 World Championships.
