Russian State Children's Library

The Russian State Children's Library, also called the RGDB, is the world's largest Children's library, [1] [2] located in the Russian capital of Moscow. The library receives 45,000 visitors a year and 1.2 million online visitors annually. [3] As of 2019, the Russian State Children's Library has over 560,000 books in its collection, in addition to other materials. [4]

History

The building was established in December 1969, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019. [5] [2] Vladimir Putin congratulated the library's anniversary. [4] The Library runs a cultural exchange project called Hello, Neighbour! that seeks to introduce Russians to other cultures. [6] In 2019, the Emirati Kalimat Foundation for Children’s Empowerment donated large numbers of Arabic children's books to the library as part of a cultural exchange program with Arabs, [3] and in 2020, the library hosted an online "Fabulous Azerbaijan" initiative about Azerbaijani culture and traditions. [6] The RGDB held a "Draw Egypt" contest in October 2020 in which Russian children submitted drawings of what they thought Egypt must be like. [7]

Russian President Vladimir Putin and First Lady of the United States Laura Bush visited the library together in 2002. [8]

The 2005 Moscow Victory Day Parade was a military parade which took place in Red Square in Moscow on 9 May 2005 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the capitulation of Nazi Germany in 1945. The parade was inspected by the Minister of Defence Sergei Ivanov and it was commanded by Moscow Military District Commander General of the Army Ivan Efremov. Music was performed by the Massed Bands of the Moscow Garrison directed by Colonel Valery Khalilov on his 3rd national parade, the first to include 4 international marching bands. After the inspection of the troops, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin gave his 6th-holiday address to the nation. More than 150 foreign dignitaries were presented. Among them were Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura, President of the United States George W. Bush, Japanese Prime Minister Junichirō Koizumi, French President Jacques Chirac, Chancellor of Germany Gerhard Schroeder, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and President of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov. It was the largest parade in the history of Russia, and one of the largest in the world's history.
