Ryan Monro (born 26 July 1981) is an Australian bassist, known for playing with Australian ska/jazz band The Cat Empire. [1] He was bassist for The Cat Empire from its inception until 2021 and also plays in jazz trio "The Genie", which includes fellow Cat Empire members, Ollie McGill on keyboards and Will Hull Brown on drums. His cousin is Shaun Taylor, a farmer, and chef.

Monro originally started playing guitar in grade 9 at Frankston High School but soon moved to electric bass. He later picked up double bass and after graduating from high school, attended the Victorian College of Arts. In late 1999, Monro met and began playing in a trio with Ollie McGill on keyboards and Felix Riebl on percussion and vocals. Calling themselves "The Cat Empire", they started playing a wide variety of gigs in clubs like Dizzy's and Bennett's Lane in Melbourne. The band soon expanded in 2001 adding Harry James Angus on trumpet, Will Hull-Brown on drums and Jamshid "Jumps" Khadiwala as a DJ. [2] With the band, he released eight studio albums. It was announced in March 2021 that Monro was retiring from the band. He was scheduled to play his last show at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on 6 March 2021, [2] however he rejoined the band to play their final Melbourne shows in December 2021. He played his final show with the band on 16 December 2021. [3] Since 2017, he has played bass for Melbourne band The Meltdown. [4]

He created a recording of Telstra's speaking clock before it went offline in 2019 and used the recording for a new website, 1194online.com . [5] [6]

So Many Nights is The Cat Empire's fourth studio album. On 30 July 2007, the band announced on their website and to their mailing list that the album has been released on 22 September. The previous record was held by You Am I for seven shows in seven nights at the same venue.

Rising with the Sun is the seventh studio album by Melbourne band The Cat Empire. It was produced by Jan Skubiszewski and released on 4 March 2016 through Two Shoes Records. The first single was "Qué Será Ahora", followed by "Wolves" and "Bulls". "Wolves" placed at number 79 in the Triple J Hottest 100, 2015. It debuted at number one on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart, the band's second number-one debut, the first being Two Shoes (2005).

Stolen Diamonds is the eighth studio album by Melbourne band The Cat Empire. It was produced by Jan Skubiszewski and released on 15 February 2019 through Two Shoes Records. It debuted at Number 4 on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart, making it the band's sixth top 10 debut, following Rising with the Sun (2016). To promote the album, the band released a new single on the first of each month leading up to the release, starting with "Ready Now" on 1 July 2018. Next released was "Stolen Diamonds" in August, followed by "La Sirene" in September, "Kila" in October, "Sola" in November, "Barricades" in December, "Oscar Wilde" in January and "Echoes" in February.

Spinifex Gum is an Australian musical collective based in Cairns, a collaboration between the Indigenous ensemble the Marliya Choir, Felix Riebl and Ollie McGill of the Melbourne band The Cat Empire, Lyn Williams, and Deborah Brown. The performers share the stories of the Yindjibarndi people in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
