Ryan Shortland (born 27 January 1986 in Masterton, New Zealand) is a former rugby union player who last played for the Newcastle Falcons in the Aviva Premiership. Before switching to rugby union, he previously played rugby league in the NRL.
Of Māori heritage, [4] Shortland was born in Masterton but grew up in Australia. Shortland started playing rugby league for the Coogee Randwick Wombats in Sydney.
Shortland signed with the Melbourne Storm and was sent by the Storm to play in the Queensland Cup with the Norths Devils. [5]
He played one first grade game for the club in Round 2 of 2007. A knee ligament injury playing for Brisbane Norths in the Queensland Cup ended Shortland's season soon after. [6]
Shortland signed a one-year contract with the New Zealand Warriors for the 2008 season. [7] [8] He was limited to just five appearances in first grade, being stuck behind international centres Brent Tate and Jerome Ropati. As a result, he was not re-signed for the 2009 season. [9]
After being released by the Warriors, Shortland set his sights on a career in rugby union so he could stay in New Zealand. In late 2008 he played for the New Zealand Barbarians against the All Blacks in a warm up match before their Grand Slam tour. [10] [11] After talks with several rugby unions Shortland signed with the newly promoted Taieri in Otago and then made the Otago team for the 2009 Air New Zealand Cup. [12] [13] [14]
Shortland got off to a promising start for Otago in the 2009 Air New Zealand Cup, scoring 3 tries in 10 appearances, and was included in the Highlanders wider training group for the 2010 Super 14 season. However, like the rest of his team, Shortland struggled in the 2010 ITM Cup, failing to score a try in 9 matches.
After leaving Otago, Shortland moved to England, where he played with the Newcastle Falcons of the Aviva Premiership, having debuted in the 2011–12 season. He played three seasons with the Falcons, his last coming in 2013–14. [15]
Andrew James Goode is a sports pundit and retired rugby union player. Goode had an 18-year professional career playing over 400 games and scoring over 4,000 points. He played professionally in England, France and South Africa featuring for Leicester Tigers, Saracens, Worcester Warriors, Wasps and Newcastle Falcons in England's Premiership Rugby, CA Brive in France's Top 14 and for Super Rugby's Sharks in South Africa. Goode represented England 17 times between 2005 and 2009 scoring 107 points.
Michael Witt is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in Australasia's National Rugby League (NRL) competition for the Parramatta Eels, Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles and the New Zealand Warriors, before a season playing rugby union in the Air New Zealand Cup. He then returned to rugby league, playing in the Super League for Crusaders RL and the London Broncos. Witt then played one more season in Australia for the St. George Illawarra Dragons.
Vincent "Vinny" Mellars is a New Zealand rugby league and rugby union footballer who plays in the Centres. He has previously played in the NRL, Super League and Air New Zealand Cup and in the RFL Championship for Featherstone Rovers.
Stephen Peter Kearney is a New Zealand professional rugby league football coach who until 2020 was the head coach of the New Zealand Warriors in the NRL and a former player.

Carl Joseph Hayman is a retired New Zealand rugby union footballer who played at tighthead prop. Hayman has previously played for the Highlanders in Super Rugby, Otago in the NPC, and Newcastle Falcons in the English Premiership, as well as making 45 appearances for New Zealand at international level. Hayman announced his retirement from professional rugby in January 2015, aged 35. Post retirement Hayman has been diagnosed with early-onset dementia and probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
Nili Latu, playing name of Otenili Langilangi is a Tongan rugby union footballer. In 2018, Latu left Newcastle Falcons after helping Falcons achieve 4th in the Aviva Premiership, the highest finish in 20 years. He moved to Japan to continue playing rugby.
Alesana "Alex" Tuilagi is a former Samoan rugby player. He is a retired footballer, currently residing in Fogapoa Savaii and has appeared numerous times for his national team Samoa. He previously played for Parma in Italy and for Leicester Tigers in the Aviva Premiership and more recently Newcastle Falcons. As an incredibly strong player, Tuilagi uses his blend of pace and power to good effect, proving a nightmare for many defences. Such a combination of speed and strength makes him very difficult for defences to handle.
Denan Kemp is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 2000s and 2010s in the National Rugby League (NRL). Kemp's position of choice was on the wing. He played in the NRL for the Brisbane Broncos, the New Zealand Warriors and the St George Illawarra Dragons. He also had a brief stint in rugby union in 2011, playing for Southern Districts in the Shute Shield competition. Post football, Kemp has launched has his own podcast and beer.
