Ryan Ward (born January 2, 1979) is a Canadian actor, film director and screenwriter. [1] He is best known for his debut feature film as a director, Son of the Sunshine , for which Ward and Matthew Heiti were shortlisted Genie Award nominees for Best Original Screenplay at the 32nd Genie Awards in 2012. Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, [3] he now splits his time between Winnipeg and Los Angeles. [4] As an actor, he had primarily supporting roles in films, including Nostradamus, We Ate the Children Last and Sidekick , prior to Son of the Sunshine, as well as a long-running stage role in the original Off-Broadway and Toronto productions of Evil Dead The Musical for which he was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award. He has also directed the short films In the Beginning was Water and Sky (PBS, National Film Board of Canada), Amerika, Time Traveling Through Time, and Our Secret. [8] [9]
In 2023 Ward released Daughter of the Sun , a sequel to Son of the Sunshine. [10]

Son of the Sunshine is a Canadian supernatural drama film. Directed by Ryan Ward and written by Ward and Matthew Heiti, the film stars Ward as Sonny Johnns, a young man with Tourette syndrome who undergoes an experimental surgical procedure to cure the condition, only to discover that he also loses his supernatural ability to heal others.
Come from Away is a musical, with book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein. It is based on the events in the Newfoundland town of Gander during the week following the September 11 attacks, when 38 planes, carrying approximately 7,000 passengers, were ordered to land unexpectedly at Gander International Airport. The characters in the musical are based on actual Gander residents and stranded travelers they housed and fed.
