The Merlin is a 68 foot long by 12 foot wide monohull (ULDB) racing yacht designed by Bill Lee. Weighing 25,000 pounds, it is considered one of the most famous racing yachts in the United States, and has won numerous offshore yacht races including the Transpac (Transpacific Yacht Race) in 1977, establishing a course record that stood for 20 years. The victory became the subject of a feature article in Sports Illustrated, further enhancing its prestige. [1] In 2017, Merlin was purchased by Chip Merlin.
The Merlin was designed by Bill Lee and finished in 1976. [1] [2] In 1977, it set a race record at the Transpacific Yacht Race by finishing over 22 hours ahead of the previous record set in 1971. [3] The record lasted 20 years until beaten by the Pyewacket in 1997. [3]
William “Chip” F. Merlin purchased the Merlin in 2017. [4] In 2018, it won three separate regattas. It also set another course record in the 50th running from St. Petersburg, FL, to Isla Mujeras.
Part of the reason why Merlin is lauded amongst the racing community is that it is heralded as the first of its kind. [3] [5] The design of the Merlin is considered to have started a new generation of ultra light displacement boat design. [1] [3] It is long, narrow, and light weight. [3]
Lee’s innovative, yet at the time controversial, design reshaped the schematics applied to racing vessels. Lee’s background was certainly not given proper attention, as he held a mechanical engineering degree and worked in the defense industry performing stress and weight analysis tests on amphibious crafts and submarines prior to his yacht racing endeavors.[ citation needed ]
In 2009, Trisha Steele, a fourth-generation Transpac racer and herself a former owner of Merlin, dedicated a new trophy, The Merlin Trophy, [13] for the fastest elapsed time for the unlimited class of yachts competing in the Transpac Race. The trophy was built by Ken Gardiner and is a scale model of Merlin itself. [14] The Merlin Trophy was for RSS 51 and 52 waiver yachts (exempt from the Racing Rules of Sailing limitations on moveable ballast and/or stored power) up to 100 feet with the shortest elapsed time but since 2019 the trophy has been awarded to yachts with manual power only, making previous winners like Alfa Romeo in 2009 now ineligible. In even-numbered years the Pacific Cup race starts out of San Francisco and is run by the Pacific Cup Yacht Club. Started in 1906 by Clarence W. Macfarlane and hosted by Los Angeles Yacht Club, it is one of yachting's premier offshore races and attracts entrants from all over the world. The race is organized by the Transpacific Yacht Club.
The Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race (MHOR) is a biennial sailing race which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2005. It runs between Marblehead, Massachusetts and Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is believed to be the longest running offshore ocean race in the world and is considered one of the pre-eminent ocean races of the North Atlantic.
The Pacific Cup is a yacht race from San Francisco, California to Kaneohe, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. The enjoyable exercise in yacht racing is run in even-numbered years by the Pacific Cup Yacht Club, while in odd years the Transpacific Yacht Race sails for Hawaii out of Los Angeles. While billed as "The Fun Race to Hawaii," this race take preparation seriously and provides a number of seminars and resources to help sailors and crew find safety and success. The level of competition rises each year as well, with yachts coming in from around the world including Switzerland and Japan.

The Olson 30 is a sailboat designed by George Olson of Santa Cruz, CA around 1978. Olson was a surfer and surfboard shaper who decided to design a 30' ultra light displacement boat while on a delivery from Honolulu to Santa Cruz on Merlin, a 68' Bill Lee designed and built ultralight sailboat which had competed in the biennial Transpac race in 1977. During this delivery, Olson came up with the idea while sailing with Denis Bassano and Don Snyder, who lent their initials to the prototype's name, SOB 30. The resulting boat was christened Pacific High, and it was launched in 1978.

The film chronicles a real-life crew training and competing in the 44th Transpacific Yacht Race aboard a TP52 class sailing yacht, Morning Light.
Bill Lee is the designer of noted ocean racing yachts, and one of the founders of the Santa Cruz school of boatbuilding. Known to many as the Wizard, Lee's designs achieved notoriety in the 1970s, with Chutzpah and Merlin having won the Transpacific Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Honolulu many times. Merlin set and held the course record between 1977 and 1997, making the 1977 crossing in only 8 days, 11 hours and 1 minute.

The Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race is held annually, starting on Good Friday. Route Halifax Saint-Pierre Ocean Race is an ocean race held in late June or early July, every two years, from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada for a distance of approximately 350 nautical miles (650 km) to Saint-Pierre, in the French archipelago of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon off of coastal Newfoundland. It is raced by crews of two or more people, most commonly in sailboats in the 30 to 40 foot range, but boats from 21 feet (6.4 m) to 60 feet (18 m) have been raced in the past.
Ticonderoga, also called Ti or Big Ti, is a 72-foot ketch, designed by L. Francis Herreshoff and launched in 1936 at Quincy Adams Yacht Yard in Massachusetts. She was known under the name of Tioga II until 1946.
