Until 1 January 2007 Sønderhald municipality was a municipality (Danish, kommune ) in the former Aarhus County in the eastern part of the Jutland peninsula (Djurs) in central Denmark. It covered an area of 138 km², and had a total population of 8.503 (2005). Its last mayor was Kirsten Wyrtz, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party. The site of its municipal council was Auning. Other towns in the municipality were Assentoft, Uggelhuse, and Øster Alling.

Danish is a North Germanic language spoken by around six million people, principally in Denmark and in the region of Southern Schleswig in northern Germany, where it has minority language status. Also, minor Danish-speaking communities are found in Norway, Sweden, Spain, the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Argentina. Due to immigration and language shift in urban areas, around 15–20% of the population of Greenland speak Danish as their first language.

Denmark is divided into five regions, which contain 98 municipalities. This structure was established per an administrative reform of the public sector of Denmark, effective 26 June 2005, which abolished the 13 counties and created five regions which unlike the counties (1970-2006) are not municipalities. The 270 municipalities were consolidated into 98 larger units, most of which have at least 20,000 inhabitants.

Aarhus County or Århus County is a former county of Denmark on the Jutland peninsula. It was created in 1970 by a merger of three counties: Århus, Randers and Skanderborg. The county was abolished effective 1 January 2007, when almost all of it merged into Region Midtjylland. A very small portion was merged into Region Nordjylland. At the time of its abolishment, more than 20,000 people worked for the county.

The municipality was created in 1970 due to a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that combined a number of existing parishes:

A parish is a territorial entity in many Christian denominations, constituting a division within a diocese. A parish is under the pastoral care and clerical jurisdiction of a parish priest, who might be assisted by one or more curates, and who operates from a parish church. Historically, a parish often covered the same geographical area as a manor. Its association with the parish church remains paramount.

Sønderhald municipality ceased to exist due to Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). The eastern part of the municipality was combined with Nørre Djurs, Rougsø and Grenaa municipalities to form the new Norddjurs municipality. This created a municipality with an area of 661 km² and a total population of 34,382 (2005). The new municipality belongs to Region Midtjylland ("Mid-Jutland Region"). The remainder was incorporated into an enlarged Randers municipality along with Randers, Nørhald, and Purhus municipalities, as well as parts of Mariager and Langå.

Until January 1, 2007 Rougsø municipality was a municipality in the former Aarhus County on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in central Denmark. It covered an area of 224 km², and had a total population of 8.078 (2005). Its last mayor was Torben Jensen. The site of its municipal council was Allingåbro. Other towns in the municipality were Gjesing, Holbæk, Nørager, Vivild, and Ørsted.

Rosenholm Municipality

Until 1 January 2007 Rosenholm municipality was a municipality in the former Aarhus County on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in central Denmark just north of Aarhus and is more or less a suburb today. The municipality covered an area of 141 km2, and had a total population of 10.325 (2005). Its last mayor was Richard Volander, a member of the Venstre political party. The main town and the site of its municipal council was the town of Hornslet.

The municipality covered an area of 228 km2, and had a total population of 8,513 (2005). The municipality's main city and the site of its municipal council was the town of Grenaa. Auning is a minor town on the main road between Randers and Grenå, with a population of 2,984. It lies in Region Midtjylland and in Norddjurs Municipality. It used to be one of the two major cities in the abolished Sønderhald Municipality, the other being Assentoft which now belongs to Randers Municipality.
