S.A. John Ross (also known as John Ross,SA Amandla, Smit Amandla and Iconic 09) along with her sister ship S.A. Wolraad Woltemade, was one of a pair of South African ocean-going salvage tugs built in the late 1970s in order to support passage of redirected (in particular supertankers) traffic around the Cape of Good Hope as a result of the closure of the Suez Canal following the Six-Day War.
For a time after their construction, the tugs held the record for the most powerful marine salvage vessels of their type in the world. [1] The S.A. John Ross was named after the Scotsman Charles Maclean, who during his exploits during the Anglo-Zulu war became known as "John Ross".
The S.A. John Ross was designed jointly by the Robb Caledon Shipyard and the Arnesen Christensen marine engineering office in Oslo, and included a deckhouse located three-quarters forward and a long aft working deck. Winches were housed in the rear part of the superstructure and were designed for a maximum bollard pull of 205 tonnes and a static load of up to 320 tonnes.
During construction, the aft working area was equipped with a rear double mast and working boom with a lifting capacity of 30 tonnes. This was later removed for stability reasons and replaced by an electro-hydraulic crane. The propulsion system consisted of two Mirrlees Blackstone 16-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines of Type 16 KVR Major with a combined output of over 14,000 kilowatts (19,000 hp ). The two engines were connected to a single drive shaft via gearbox, equipped with a variable pitch propeller and slotted nozzle. After a grounding incident, the vessel sailed nozzle-less until the fitting of a Lips nozzle in 1979. In addition, four MAK auxiliary diesel engines rated at 740 kW each and one auxiliary diesel were included. Mooring and undocking maneuvers were supported by an 800 kW (1,100 hp) bow thruster.
The S.A John Ross was laid down at the Elgin Brown & Hamer shipyard in Durban in March 1974 in response to the closure of the Suez Canal and the potential need to provide support to shipping lines which had consequently begun switching to the use of supertankers (aka Ultra Large Crude Carriers (ULCC)) capable of carrying cargo around the Cape and in so doing avoiding potential disruptions. In addition, the stranding of the tanker SS Wafra off Cape Agulhas in 1971 and its subsequent re-floating by the passing powerful German tug Oceanic, led to the realization by the South African authorities that the local harbour tugs available in local ports at the time would be insufficient for any such future operations, and that purpose built ocean going tugs would be needed in the future. The S.A. John Ross and her sister ship were custom designed for service along the notoriously unpredictable waters off South Africa and at the time represented the first government subsidized maritime Emergency Towing Service in the world, a model which was quickly emulated by many countries thereafter. [3] [4] Their robust design and significant power designed to allow their to operate on the South African coast made them more than capable for other operation around the globe and for a time earned them the title of the most powerful vessels of their kind in the world - a record held until the launching of the Russian salvage tugs Fotiy Krylov and Nikolay Chiker in 1989. [4] Due to her large displacement and deep draft, the S.A. John Ross was known for its excellent sea-keeping characteristics and due to her hull design and single propeller configuration, her mobilization time and speed were superior to all vessels in her class, to the extent that in 2016, some 40 years after her initial sea trials, she was still officially classed as the fastest salvage tug in the world. The tugs soon came to be an integral part of maritime towing operations, undertaking dozens of emergency towing and salvage operations both locally along the South African coast as well as internationally. After reopening of the Suez Canal, the tug conducted many long distance tows as part of the Global Towing Alliance. One such example of the John Ross's exploits was the successful towing of the rig Period 77 through the Straits of Magellan in winds of up to 110 knots in August 1984. [4] Initially operated by SAF Marine which evolved into Pentow Marine, the "S.A." prefix was dropped. Thereafter when the Dutch operator Smit became a partner in Pentow, which then became Smit Dudula, the John Ross was renamed in 2003 to Smit Amandla. [6]
At the time of their design, the John Ross and the Wolraad Woltemade established a new standard for large, powerful, trans-ocean going salvage vessels, and their development led directly to the creation and implementation of the Emergency Standby Towing Vessel concept - a first by the South African authorities and one which was subsequently implemented by many other countries globally. [2]
In addition to her numerous salvage operations, the John Ross is estimated to have prevented countless potentially devastating pollution incidents over the course of her history. The John Ross was also involved in numerous anti-poaching and conservation efforts, both locally in South Africa as well as in conjunction with foreign agencies. [7] [8]
A tugboat or tug is a marine vessel that manoeuvres other vessels by pushing or pulling them, with direct contact or a tow line. These boats typically tug ships in circumstances where they cannot or should not move under their own power, such as in crowded harbors or narrow canals, or cannot move at all, such as barges, disabled ships, log rafts, or oil platforms. Some are ocean-going, and some are icebreakers or salvage tugs. Early models were powered by steam engines, which were later superseded by diesel engines. Many have deluge gun water jets, which help in firefighting, especially in harbours.

A salvage tug, also known historically as a wrecking tug, is a specialized type of tugboat that is used to rescue ships that are in distress or in danger of sinking, or to salvage ships that have already sunk or run aground.
Wolraad Woltemade 1708 – 1 June 1773 was a Cape Dutch dairy farmer, who died while rescuing sailors from the wreck of the ship De Jonge Thomas in Table Bay on 1 June 1773. The story was reported by the Swedish naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg who was in South Africa as a surgeon for the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie at the time.
USS Atakapa (ATF-149) was an Achomawi class of fleet ocean tug. It was named after the Atakapa Native American tribe that once inhabited territory which is now southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.
SS Foundation Franklin was a seagoing salvage tug built for the Royal Navy as HMS Frisky in 1918. In 1924, the tugboat was sold and renamed Gustavo Ipland before being acquired in 1930 by Foundation Maritime and renamed Foundation Franklin. The tugboat became famous for many daring salvage operations and rescues between 1930 and 1949. Her many rescues and salvage triumphs were celebrated in Farley Mowat's book The Grey Seas Under. In 1948, the ship was damaged in a hurricane and not considered repairable. The tug was broken up for scrap in 1949 at Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Her purpose was to aid ships, usually by towing, on the high seas or in combat or post-combat areas, plus "other duties as assigned." She served in the Atlantic Ocean and, at war's end, returned home with three battle stars to her credit.

USNS Narragansett (T-ATF-167) is a Powhatan-class fleet ocean tugboat of the US Navy. She was launched in 1979 and inactivated in 1999, but has since been employed in a number of roles. She is still in service as of 2023 as a training support vessel for Carrier Strike Group 4.
An emergency tow vessel, also called emergency towing vessel, (ETV) is a multi purpose boat used by state authorities to tow disabled vessels on high seas in order to prevent dangers to man and environment. The disabled vessel is either towed to a safe haven or kept in place against wind and current until commercial assistance by tug boats has arrived on site or until it has been repaired to the extent of being able to manoeuvre on its own. The need for ETVs as a preventive measure has arisen since the number of available commercial salvage tugs was reduced while potential dangers from individual vessels have increased. E.g. Spain has fourteen, Turkey has eleven, Germany operates eight, Norway has seven, France has five, Sweden three and the Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, Iceland and Finland each have one official emergency tug boat. Australia also operates emergency response vessels. The United Kingdom's four strong ETV fleet was to be disbanded in September 2011 due to budget cuts but the two vessels operating in Scottish waters received an extension of contract until the end of 2011.
USNS Powhatan (T-ATF-166) was the lead ship of the United States Navy Powhatan-class fleet ocean tugboats. She was in service with the U.S. Navy from 1979 to 1999, and then was leased to a private towing and salvage company. At the end of the lease in 2008, the ship was sold to the Turkish Navy which recommissioned her as TCG Inebolu.
ST Cervia was built in 1946 as a seagoing tug for use as a fleet auxiliary by Alexandra Hall & Company Ltd of Aberdeen, Scotland. Today she is a floating Museum still undergoing restoration in Ramsgate, Kent.
The Powhatan class of fleet ocean tugs consists of seven ships built for the United States Navy, and operated by the Military Sealift Command (MSC). The lead ship of the class was launched in 1978 and the last ship in MSC service will be deactivated in 2023. During their service life, the Powhatan's were the most powerful tugs owned by the Navy.
SAS Somerset was a Bar-class boom defence vessel of the South African Navy, formerly preserved as a museum ship in Cape Town. It was scrapped in April 2024. Formerly HMS Barcross, it operated in Saldanha Bay, was transferred to South Africa Naval Forces during World War II, and was purchased by South Africa in 1947.
MT Phoenix was a tanker which went aground in heavy seas at Sheffield Beach just north of Ballito near Durban, South Africa on the morning of 26 July 2011. The vessel was on its way to India to be scrapped when it ran aground. After three attempts, it was refloated, towed and then scuttled and sunk in 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) of water, about 80 kilometres (43 nmi) offshore of Amanzimtoti, south of Durban. The vessel was reportedly owned by either Suhair Khan of Dubai or Marika Investments, Lagos, Nigeria.
The SS Wafra oil spill occurred on 27 February 1971, when SS Wafra, an oil tanker, ran aground while under tow near Cape Agulhas, South Africa. Approximately 200,000 barrels of crude oil were leaked into the ocean. The larger part of the ship was refloated, towed out to sea, and then sunk by the South African Air Force to prevent further oil contamination of the coastline.
Point Chebucto is a harbour tug that was built at the Halifax Shipyard in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1992. She was christened in January of 1993 by Mrs. Joyce Watson, wife of Cpt. David A. Watson. She is one of very few harbour tugs that were built at the Halifax Shipyards. She has been aiding ships in and out of Halifax Harbour and later Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia since she was registered in January 1993. The tug was built for Eastern Canada Towing Limited, a company that has been around for over 60 years. The tug is named after the point at Chebucto Head, continuing the tradition of Eastern Canada Towing of naming its tugs after points. Eastern Canada Towing took over Foundation Maritime's work in the field of Harbour, Coastal and Deep-Sea tow and salvage. The firm owns and operate a fleet of modern tugs ranging from 1250 HP - 5400 HP. Most tugs are ice strengthened, with several having Ice Class 1 certification. Their head office is also in Halifax. Eastern Canada Towing was purchased in 2007 by Svitzer, a tug boat division of Maersk.
Zhong Shan Da Xue Ji Di is a Chinese icebreaker owned by the Sun Yat-sen University. She was built in 1983 as an icebreaking anchor handling tug supply vessel (AHTS) Ikaluk for BeauDril, the drilling subsidiary of Gulf Canada Resources, to support offshore oil exploration in the Beaufort Sea. In the 1990s, the vessel was acquired by Canadian Marine Drilling (Canmar) and renamed Canmar Ikaluk. In 1998, she was purchased by Smit International and served in the Sakhalin oil fields as Smit Sibu. In 2009, she was acquired by FEMCO Management and in 2012 given back her original name. Ikaluk was sold to China in February 2018 and renamed Beijing Ocean Leader. In late 2021, the vessel was acquired by its current owner.
Kigoriak was a Canadian and later Russian icebreaking anchor handling tug supply vessel. Built by Saint John Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company for Canadian Marine Drilling (Canmar) in 1979 as Canmar Kigoriak, she was the first commercial icebreaking vessel developed to support offshore oil exploration in the Beaufort Sea.
Sea Victory was an ocean-going tugboat. She is best known for her long-distance tows of several of the U.S. Navy's most celebrated and historic vessels. For much of her career she was one of the most powerful American-flagged tugs, which earned her major jobs that could not be completed by smaller vessels. She was launched in 1974 and scrapped, likely in 2023.
